It would take only about 33.00 Wcrth of insecticide to kill all the ragweed in this Province but the ragweed has to be found first. That was the opinion expressed yesterday by Mr. George V. Fraser, director of the Travel Biueau. when asked about the situation here. Mr. Fraser pointed out that an air index of l.00 was considered an excellent pollen rating everywhere. but here the index was better than excellent with a figure of 0.4. That is good news for sufferers from bayfever who annually have to seek some place where they may obtain relief.

At. present there is just one poll- en station on the Island and that is at Dalvay. The air index quoted applies roughly to an area within 20 miles of the station. It is pro- posed to establish some stations in (iharlottetown. Montague, Sourls, summerside. Cavendish. Alberton and O'Lesry. This would virtually complete coverage of,the Province amt would enable researchers to quickly locate any areas in which ragweed exists. The air index would show the volume. if any. present in the district and then it would cimply he a matter of locating the weed and destroying it by spray.

May Offer Prise

Consideration is being given to offering a prize to the school child who first finds it field of ragweed. Because the children during their play cover more tet1'itor,v than the average farmer at his daily work. it. is believed that with the young- sters hunting for ragweed. all patches could be found and erad- icated bv this fall. Mr. Elzear Campagna. professor of botany at Montreal. said in a recent. letter that as far as Char- lottetown is concerned he is still under the impression gained two years ago that it is practically free from ragweed. However. before the capital is advertised as being free from the nuisance he suggested that is determined search be made io locate any possible colonies of it and eliminate them. This was a "fundamental" change in society and brought with it the need for an old age pension scheme. The Federal pen- sion scheme which goes into ef- fect in two weeks was "our major single advance" in social pro- gress.

"If we are going to make full use of the productive capacity of our senior citizens and at the same time help them to live ful- ler richer lives, we will have to find a new approach to the whole question of old age." he said.

"Our problem is to re-adapt our thinking so,that we can keep our senior citizens from becom- ing displaced persons'. cut adrift from their intellectual, cultural and spiritual anchors."

More attention must be given health, welfare, educational and cultural needs of the older peo-

ple.
