He had been sent to tell her of the accidental death of a brother, and this was (low she met him. She explained afterwards: "In this morning's service you gave .out the hymn ”'rhy will a done! Now this is agreat hymn. Back of it are memories of Gt.-' emane. It brings us face to face with use mystery of suffering in human life.

Some of the richest experiences in the history of faith have arti- en out of the spirit it expresses. on the other hand. to lot bit- terness under trial take the place of Itrust. spells disaster for the sou .

Sometimes we have listened with interest to a young minis- ter's treatment of this subject. His own consecration has been an acceptance without any eservan tions of God's will for hi he is perfectly certain that infinite wis- dom and love are bobind every- tliing that can befall a child of God: he calls every sufferer to i-in in the prayer "Tiny will be 'r'o'ie!" with the assurance that in ms. as in everything. love will pn- vail and reach its ends. FORTY YEARS LATE ..

And yet we wonder if he will be able to preach that sermon to

After all God has guided His people to some significant answers to that question.

MIBTAKES ..

Many of out sufferings are the consequences of our own mistakes and violations of the laws of our own nature. Perhaps we did not understand those laws. We remem- ber one man who could never un- derstand why God had striken him with helplessness in his old age.

He had always obeyed God's com-"

mands and had supported His cause. But his neighbors knew that his sufferings were the effects of his own bad habits.

He did not understand the laws of life; if he had seen them as God's will. he would have obeyed them. He suffered through sins of ignorance.

Great progress has been made when men have awakened to the fact that handicaps and maiaidea which their father interpreted as God's will for them were r evils which they are called to fight. Jesus has taught us that disease is God's enemy. and health His claim for His creatures.

Jesus found the Divine Spirit working through Him to heal the llcklnd veloaae men from every- thing that held them down. That wondrous ministry of healing and helpfulness has inspired men by the million to war against suffering in all its forms. nave-Norrs' ,.

Once the "Have-nots" in society were taught that their low estate was God's will for them and that they ought to submit to the "Haves" and be content.

Now we see Christianity as a driving force which spurs people Wefvwhere to conque their cir- cumstancu and claim their rights Ind "EM Illlnst all that denies them the more abundant life of which Christ spoke.

So we might go on into every area of human interest and
