By his princely gifts to McGill Uni- versity, William OC. McDonald, of -Mon- treal, has conferred a continual boon upon Canada and the world atlarge. He de- serves the gratitude of his country as truly as any man in itever did. Others have made fortunes, but none hes used money more prudently or beneficently. Indepen- dently of the fact that he was born and bred and educated in this Province, we are delighted that his great and meritorious service to the State bas been formally re- cognized and rewarded by the head of the State. So far as he is personally conceroed the value of a title is as nothing. His

For the year 1898, the value of the exports of the United States will amount to $1,200,000,000. This great sum approximates closely to that of the value of the total exports of Great Britain. Great Britain’s tota! exports aggregate the enormous amount of $1,455,- 000,000 a year. But the United States are, in spite of protection, easily second in point of trade with the world at large; and they are catching up to Great Britain. Their domestic trade is beyond calcula~-
