There has been wide specula- tion about probable topics of dis- cussion between Churchill and President Truman. Top item on the agenda is expected to be the question of United States air bases in Britain. Churchill is understood to be seeking under- takings that Britain be given more control over the bases.

Mr. Baker spoke briefly and said he thought the only pos- slble criticism of the excellent plans of the Society was that too much attention may be given to the outside of the homes and not enough to the inside He suggested changes which might lighten the work of the women might per- suade many girls to stay home and marry a farmer instead of going to the towns to be a sten- ugrapher.

At: the conclusion of the dinner colored slides showing the famous garden of Mrs. Gordon MacMil- ian, comwall, were flushed on the screen by Mr. J. K. Martin of the National Film Board, while Mrs. MacMillan named the flowers and told the audience special features of each.

Business Session

The business session brought out :1 large number of excellent suggestions from members of the executive as to future programs the Rural Beautification society should follow.

It was noted with regret that of late years there had been a distinct drop in the number of

cniricsgfor the contest in the school improvement; class. It was fclt. that perhaps the schools

might be included in the Com- munity Improvement class. Con- siderable discussion also centred around the lock of care of cem- eterics. especially those holding the graves of pioneers. Mr. Wal- for Show suggested that perhaps it might be well to make I new class to cover improvements in them.

There was also a drop in the total number of entries this year with 121 in all classes competing. However. it was pointed out that in the past six years there had been over 1,000 entries in the homei. schools and halls.

Consideration was given at the meeting to Mr. Baker's suggestion relative inside improvements and the new executive will further discuss it. There was a feeling that installation of bathrooms and running water certainly tlhould count for something in consider- ing improvements to homes.

There was talk about the ad- visability of planting trees along the roadsldcs. Of late years too many, it was said, have been cut down and the countryside is being denuded of one of its most attractive sights from the tourist point of view.

Highway Improvement

A second full day was necessary to oolnplote the judging at the 21st annual Live mx show. which saw the champions decided in all clas- ses. -Repeating the first day, the placing was very close. with the winners being evenly divided and no one entry dominating. - Two all-wool blankets have been donated by the Hudson's Bay Company. and it was decided by the competitors to award one each to the aggregate point winners in the fox and mink clnues. Tile winner of the fox section will be awarded his blanket today., as it was felt that an accurate check of the points should be made over- night. points separate the leading three or four exhibitors.

Late in the afternoon the whole building was a. hive of activity. the animals of one section hardly off the table before the next class was in position for Judginl. so the exhibitors raced against the failing light in order to give Judge George A. callback as much time as possible to make his decisions. Artificial light distorts the color- ing of the fur, therefore the Judg- ing must be conducted in daylight,

There was a considerable in- crease in the number of spectators viewing the proceedings yesterday, and all fox breeders present were

At the conclusion of the com- petitions, a. cleft exhibition of pelt- tng and scraping was performed by Dr. E. Two mink were used in the demonstration before an audience of ranchers and spectators who watched the proceedings with in- terest. Dr. Bowness kept up a running commentary on the tech- nique and provided the answers to all questions regarding the equip- ment used and pointed out the features which will help breeders obtain premium price: for their pelts.

At midnight, with 1.626.436 votes counted, the Conservatives had received 788,946 or 49 per cent. The Liberals had 510,227. or 31 per cent, the C.C.F. 305,001 or 19 per cent and other parties 21,662 or one per cent. In 1948 the Con- servatives received 41 per cent of the total vote-1,757,767--wlhile the Liberals had 29 per cent and the C.ClF'. 27 per cent. In the 1945 election the Conservatives had 44 per cent, LiberaLs 27 and C.C.F. 23. Total vote was 1,765,793.
