A Moted Doctor Tells Some Things That May Not be Believed. ° The intoxicating effects of teais not ap- preciated as fully as they should be, either by the indulger in its effusion or by the i who is later called upon to untoward influence on the system and to give advice in regard to its further continuation. So very little is to be found in our text-books on the subject of tea-poisoning that, unless the facilities have been such as to make a study of it possible, a recognition of the condition is far from likely. When tea has been used fora considerable period in excess |} and its detrimental action has been con- | stant, we have well defined symptoms | supervene, a few of which are such as | vertigo, mental confusion, sensible pal- pitation of the heart, restlessness, insom- nia, halluciations, ‘‘nightmare,’’ nausea, neuralgia, anorexia, constipation, pros- tration and anxiety, and a peculiar kind | of intoxication ending after hours of vigil | in a torpor from exhaustion. | What worse line of symptoms could fol- low the use of a beverage so commonly employed it is hard to imagine, and that use it to excess is unques tiona Many have confessed to an inability to ‘‘get through the day,’’ with out copious imbitions of what is, in many cases, a strong decoction. Some drink every twenty-four hours as much as fifteen pints, and some there are who are unable to judge of how much they consume, Whether a confession would be consider- ed a matter of shame, it is hard to say; the general lack of moral tone and the | total perverseness are so great. They are |} nothing more or less than genuine inebri- } ates, and look upon tea as the same agent | of support as an alcoholic does upon alco- | hol. Influence of the Earth's Motion on the Di- rection of Winds.
Suppose a railroad train at first station- ary. A traveller fires a shot towards some exterior object; it will require say two seconds for the ball to reach the object. Imagine next the train moving at the rate of thirty feet a second. The traveler aims at object the instant he is opposité it; but the ball in addition to the impulsion which has communicated to it preserves the gen- eral movement of the train, which in two seconds makes it travel laterally sixty feet. It will strike then at sorae distance be- yond the object.

All the | points of the globe turn together from the | west to the east in twenty-four hours; | but they all have in reality different rates | of velocity according to the position which they occupy. Thus all winds are turned from their first direction, and in the Northern Hemisphere this deviation is always towards the right, while in the Southern Hemisphere it is towards the left.—The Chautauquan.

A DIPHTHERIA SCARE,
There is no doubt but that diphtheria at this season in its worst form is prevalent in many cities and small towns, At the same time, that fact is no reason for fright ening people out of their wits, with every new case of sore throat. Hundreds of per- sons are said to have had diphtheria who only had a severe sore throat. The form of sore which often passes for diphtheretic is what old people cal] quinsy. “Putrid sore throat,” known long before diphtheria An old hospital nurse in Boston, says : “It ain't the clear cold of winter that lays peo- ple up with colds, catarrh and sore throats, and lays the children low with diphtheria ; its the soft, pleasant, alternating with the wet, slushy days.” This is very true, be- cause then the air is laden with poisonous vapors. The first symptoms of true diph- theria there is fever, some stupor, and dif- ficulty in breathing. Very sharp pains are often feli in the neck glanda, just below the ear. The tongue is coated, the throat and tonsils inflamed, little white spots, which increase and turn to adirty yellow or brown color. Very many reliable pec- ple claim to have cured severe cases of diphtheria with Johnson’s Anodyne Lini- meat. Be that as it may, it is worth try- ing, because we know from experience it will curea common sore throat in one night, and thousands of people claim that no remedy known will relieve colds, catarrh bronchitis, croup, etc., as promptly.
