On a sudden inspiration. he said. "Look. There's something I want you to read. I'll get it. and you sit here alone and read it. I think perhaps it will help."

He hurried from the room, re- turned in a minute with part of the manuscript. He did not stay with her. He thought it would be better if she was left alone. Besides, there was something he wanted to do.

Johnny Saxon left Ircne's room and started along the hallway. He knocked on the next door, that of Karen's, the nurse. and waited an instant for I response. There was a tense impatience about his slender, tall form. He knocked again.

There was no answer.

He flung open the door. pressed on the light switch. Karen was not in the room.

Snapping off the light. closing the door quietly behind him, he stepped up the hall to a door on the opposite side-Nancy's room.

He did not knock. Instead, care- fully and without sound, he grasp- ed ihe knob and slowly turned it. Such,extre-me care was hardly necessary. The cracks of thunder would have covered any noise.

The door was still locked.

Johnny eased the knob back into its original position again and hurried down the hall toward the front stairs. Positive he heard a door close some place in the far hall, ho ducked up the stairs leading above to the serv- ant's quarters. turned, waited.

Nancy England came-along the hall. paused, and aeemod'undecid- ed whether to go downstairs or not. She looked ill.

Her features were a white. stark mark: be: glistening hair. usually cornibed back straight and flat, wu mussed. Her eyes held a frozen stare, and looked somewhat bloodshot.

The long. wine-colored robe flopped around her legs like a monk'a oloak. One hand was in the pocket of the robe. in the other she held a key ring. Johnny heard a key jungle. Abruptly. as though coming to a decision, she continued along the second-floor hall. An Imtant later he heard the key grate softly in a lock. Mr. Alden Lcard, teacher Mount Allison Academy is spending some time with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. waiter Lcard, also his sister. Mrs. Gerald Williams and little son, Rickie. ,

Rev. Ernest 8. Weeks is con- fined to his home on account of an attack of Facial Paralysis. His friends trust that he may soon be restored to his usual health.

Mr. Albert weeks and Mr. Wm. Stavert of Lower Bedeque motored to Charlottetown one Saturday recently.

Friends of Dr and Mrs. J. W. Moresldo regret their departure from this community, during their stay here they have made many friends, who wish them success 1n their new undertaking. Dr. More- sido is planning on taking a spec- ial course in Toronto during the summer monhs. His practice is being taken over by Dr. Burton I-Iowatt. Dr. and Mrs. I-lowatt ar- rived here the first of the week and

will be warmly welcomed in this community. The funeral of the late Miss

Doris Ioulse Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edison Wright Cen- tral Bedeque. was held from the Bedeque United Church and was very largely attended. The solemn service was conducted by the ms- tor Rev. W. Burton Crowe. assist- ed by Rev. C. A. Britten. and the chair with Mrs. Walter Craig as or- ganist. The hymns sung were "The Lord's My shepherd," "oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go." and "Sale In The Arms Of Jesus." Rev. Mr. Crowe delivered a comforting and impressive address based on the words: "If it be possible let this cup pass from me, Neverthe- less not My will but Thine be Done." The pallbearers were: Wm. Cairns. Bruce Proiitt. Eldon Wright, Robert Reid. Harold Campbell and Willard Waugh. In- terment in Lower Bcdequo cem- etery. Beautiful floral tributes testified to the love and esteem of relatives and friends.

When Paddy did come up he was almost over to the darn. He came up silently, taking care not to even ripple the water. He wanted to see without being seen. This is something that is most important in the lives of Mother Nature's childrcn. Almost at once he saw the visitor on the dam. 1n the dusk he seemed to be wholly black. He was shuf- fling along and complaining as he walked. That was all Paddy needed to know.

"Prickly Porky.", thought Paddy. "I d what ho is complain- ing about now. I don't know of anyone who seems to have such a good time complaining as Prick- ly Porky. And I don't know anyone who has less to complain about. Perhaps he does it just to hear his own voice. He is alone so much that there is seldom a chance for him to talk to anyone else and so he talks to himself. Anyway that is how it seems to me. I'm sorry for anyone who has to talk to himself."

Prickly Porky gruniod and whined and shuffled along across the dam. When he got to the end of the dam. he shuffled along at the edge of the water. While he was slow there seemed to be a purpose in his ...ove-menu.

"He's going after lily-pads.” thought Paddy. "Yes. lII',.he is going after lily-pads."

And that is just exactly what Prickly Porky was doing.
