Find Lifeboat From I Missing Trawler

BOSTON. Feb. 21-(CP)--A sea- bstic-red lifeboat in which some of the 15 or 17 crew members of the Gloucester trawler Gudnui may have made a last try to stay afloat has been found. the United States Coast Guard reported today.

They said the boat was picked up by another fishing vessel about (15 miles southeast of the Gudrurrs last known position off Newfound- land.

It bore the name Gudrun on the starboard bow and Gloucester on the stem.

The Coast Guard said one oar- lock was in the lifeboat and "all gear was intact." .

The vessel was last heard from Jan. 14.

Army Offers Shori-Term Commissions

OTTAWA. Feb. 21 - (CP) -The army. switching policy to meet

expanding defence needs, today offered short-term. active ser- vice comimissions of three. four

and five years for officers up to and including the rank of major. Usually. when an officer is ap- pointed to active service with the army. he joins for as long as he is needed. Defence Minister Ciaxion said the new plan has been start- ed because more and more offic- ers are required in the expanded defence mcgram.

The short-term commisions are open to:

1. Officers who have served with the army before.

2. Members or former mem- bcrs of Canadian Officersi Training Corps at universities who have successfully com- plated two su-m-mers of train- ing.

3. Members or former mem- bers of command oontingents of C.O.T.C. who have mastered six mant-hs' training at a corps soziool.

4. Men selected from active service ranks.

The educational standard is jun- ior matriculation or its equivalent.

Those who complete their short- ic-vm convmissions and prove them- selves up to active force standards can apply for permanent commis- sions.

Defence Minister Claxton made the announcement tonight to an applauding Commons. He said the unified command of the United Nations asked Canada 'mesclay whether the 26th Infantry Brigade - the core of the army's special force A. was fully trained. and if so. whether it could be sent to Korea.
