Dr. Theodore Cuyler, in the New York Independent, affirms that one of the chicf nindrances to the success of the temperance reform in America is the want of thorough rganizativn and a solid pecuniary basis 1» Great Britain the friends of temperance, he says, are far superior both in the ,matter of organization and the amount of mony they raise to disseminate their views. Ue calls the attention of his countrymen especially to the fact that in one year the United Kingdom alliance subscribed a guarantee ‘und of £60,000.

About Taxation. Dr. Joel Swarty, of Gettysburgh, writes : It ought to seem plain that taxes are paid by property, and whatever increases the taxable wealth of a state is a benefit to all taxpayers. Wealth is acquired by the pro- ductive labor and savings of the people; in- crease of taxable property and a decrease of individual property follows. A b-asiness that adds not one iota to the wealth of the State, but fills it with crime, pauperism and vagrancy, lunacy and numerous ills and burdens, cannot be a source of revenue How can that put money into the treasury which makes no money ? The liquor traftis appears to put money into the treasury— the money the dealer psys for license—but it is only an appearance. If the liquor traflic does not put the money into the treasury, where doves it come from? It comes from the drinker to whem nothing useful or needful is given in return. The} liquor dealer pays to tae public treasury | but a very smail portion of what he col-| lects from the drinking public. He en-} riches himse!f with the greater part of it,} and pays a very small portion to the Staie for the privilege of carrying on a monopo- listic and profitable business. And yet some people would claim this as a good system of raising revenue! The money thus collected very frequently comes from those who can spare it the least—men who need their money for their wives and chil- dren, who beggar their own families to enrich the saloon keeper, and yet some would say this should be continued, claim- ing that it reduces taxes ! _>

According to a recent despatch frem St. Petersburg, an interesting case is the one at N:jini Novgorod, where a Prussian by the naine of > Polotoo has just been given a heavy scenter’e for having changed from the Orthodox Greek to the Jewish faith Tha story of th» events which led up to this reais more like a novel taan a story of facts. It seemsthat Polotoo is the son of & prosperous peasant of an adjicent village and was hired out as an errand boy some twenty years ago toa Jew, Arnstein, who Petersburg Polotoo proved to be very bright and intelligent, and was promoted step by step until he became the confidential clerk of his employer. Meanwhile, his employee's eldest daughter, who was born some three years after he came to the store, had | grown into a beautiful girl, and had in some | way fallen in love with bim. Although neither Polotoo nor the girl knew it, the) father wus aware of this love affair, but suid | nothing. Finally, eight month ago the old | man died, and on the reading of the will, it was found that he had bequeathed half | his entire fortune to his confidential clerk, on condition that ke should embrace the Jewish faith and marry his daughter. Polotoo therefore let seven months go by in order that things might quiet down, and then went through the necessary ceremonies of embracing of Judaism. Arrangements had just been completed for the marriage to take place, when Polotoo was arrested His trial was short

AN INVENTION REVOLUTIONIZING THE LITHO- GRAPHERS ART.

Mr. Albert Grignard, of the Department of the Ioterior, returned to Ortawa from New York a few days ago with his sulicitor, Mr. W. J. Code, having completed the sale to a New York corporation of an invention in connection with lithographing, which will revolutionize this Jepartment of the printing trade. It is understood that the consideration p3id to Mr. Grignard for his invention is in the neighborhood of one million dollars, together with a royalty on all the works pro- duced by his systems. The transaction is one of the greatest magnitude, and will affect the operation of every concern in the lithographing business, not only in the United States, but throughout the world. Mr. Grignard has succeeded in affecting the lithographic art so as to produce a perfectly toned picture, erabracing from fiifteen to eighteen colors ic his composition, from one, or, at the most three impressions. It originally required one impression for each color so used. This has hitherto been con sidered an imposibility, but Mr, Grignard h»s succeeded in finding the secret, for which he has been so well rewarded. Mr. Grignard will remove to New York,
