THE GRAND COULEE DAM

On August 26th., 1948, we left Vancouver and drove through New Westminlstcr on the Trans-Canada Highway. then taking Route 99 south we crossed the border at Blaine and had lunch at Everett. From there we followed No. 2 Highway east through Stevens Sccnic Pass. over the Cascade Mountains and crossed the Col- umbia Rlver at Wenatchee. From this splendid irrigated fruit area we followed the river north for sixteen miles to Orondo. then turn- ing east we climbed a very high escarpment and drove fifty miles to Dry Falls near Coulee City.

The next morning we crossed Grand Coulee, a great valley that was the former bed of the Col- umbia River. before it changed its course centuries ago. The highway we used is now submerged. to

form a great irrigation reservoir, thirty miles long and many miles wide that has an elevation of 1570 feet above sea level. We had break- fast at Almira and decided to go up and see the Grand Coulee Dam. said to be the largest oi its kind In the world.

IIOT BRAKES

After driving nineteen miles north we came in sight of the dam and of the great Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake that extends north for 151 miles clear to the Canad- ian E E y. We were so taken with the great panorama that the driver did not observe the long steep descent of'f.he highway, and our brakes got very hot as we fol- lowed switchbscks and hair-pin turns down and down for about 310 feet in less than a mile.

When we arrived down near the level of the lake, we found not only a good parking area but a large building with a theatre ar- ranged for guests. There were guides to tell the story of the con- struction of the dam in this can- yon section of the Columbia Riv- er. which drains 260.000 s qu a re miles including 10,000 square miles in Canada. From its source in British Columbia it flows north around the Big Bend. then south for a total distance of 450 miles before it crosses the border into Washington State.

We learned that the driveway across the top of the dam was 30 feet wide and 4173 feet long. The dam stands 370 feet above the water level in the river below and extends down another 150 feet to the granite bed of the excavated site. The guide described the work of construction and had a com- plete model of the river at that point as it was originally. He pressed a button and the amount of excavation proportionally was raised up by hydraulic power. so that we could see the amount of the material removed from its :4 acre base rcqured for its found- ston. He said that during the ex- cavation, one side of the canyon started to slide down. In order to

electrical equipment that up to that time had no equal anywhere. There were nine 160.000 horse pow- er turbines, with the same num- ber of 108,000 kilo watt generators directly above. connected by vert- ical steel drive shafts 36 inches in diameter. we have forgotten their length, but they had l2-inch hol- low centers to lessen their weight. We learned that each generator weighed about 1,000 tons, and it took 40 flat cars to transport each one of them from the east. it also took 20 flat cars to transport each of the nine turbines. We under- stood that one generator could sup- ply the electric current used by Chicago at that time. We also understood that the output of the nine generators has developed 2.- 300.000 kilo watts. or more than 3 million horse power.

IRRIGATION

The source of the Columbia be- ing in the Canadian Rocky Mount- ains. where the ice and snow melts slowly til late in the season. the rlverh. flood season is late spring and early summer. This is the time that water is needed for ir- rigation in what is known as the Columbia Basin. is large area in central Washington. that is semi- arid with an annual rainfall of about 8 inches. This area has a fairly good soil without gravel or rock. It is quite similar to Onl- nrio in temperature with cold will- ters in the north and milder weath-

In urging the construction of the .Grand Coulee Dam, three great propositions were presented to Con- gress: Flood control, great floods in Southern Washington had caus- ed much damage in the past; Pow- er. this was needed for all the North Western States; Irrigation, an area of over one million acres, about the size of Prince Edward island, could be satisfactorily ir- rlgated by placing retaining dams across the Grand Coulee. thirty miles south and by using three of the great turbines to pump the flood waters of the Columbia up 230 feet and into the north end of the Grand Coulee giant reservoir.

There are 12 centrifugal pumps each capable of lifting 1600 cubic feet of water per second into the reservoir. or 720,000 gallons each per minute. To do this each pump will require a 65,000 H.P. motor to operate it. Since we were at the Grand Coulee Dam a second power house has been built at the other end of the dam with nine similar turbines and generators this has doubled the power output of the plant.

Properly speaking. this week's column uld probably be called ”'.l'huc Two Weeks at S.D.U.”, for due to the fact that the end of last week found us in a somewhat doiatered seclusion. we were un- able to get our message before the world. Yes, last week the stud- uit body entered upon the annual retreat. a brief respite from the everyday trials and cares of stud- uit life that lasted from Thursday evening until Sunday afternoon. During this time, we were able, under the guiding hand of Rev. John Cans. S..!., to temporarily

ivities. our dreams. and our am- bltlous plans f r the future, to take stock an determine the ex- tent and nature of our progression, or regression, since last year. Under the protective mantle of the Siientium Magnum. we were able to extract and examine many of those thoughts. words, and act- ions, that we were wont to hastily shelve during the past year when the pressure of the pace of our daily lives denied us the opportun- ity to ecnmlne and evaluate them. We were greatly aided in this in- trospection by the timely and thought-provoking discourses of Fr. Cass who is, incidentally: the older brother of our own Fr. Frederick Cass. This I lationship brought forth many a holy chuckle when the Retreat Master chose to refer to "my little brother." With a few of these humorous threads skill- fully woven through the fabric of his masterful style of oratory. the elder Fr. Cass was very success- ful ln holding the rapt attention and interest of the students. from the older men right down to the youngest, as he led them easily through the parallel considerations of their lives and the life of our Divine Model.

To hold the interest of a group of students for an hour or so at a time is no mean task, as any of our professors will admit, and yet this is probably the weakest of the tributes that our Retreat Mast- er earned during his brief stay with us. Fortified now with the fruits of his labors coupled with our own. we are now resolved to profit by the mistakes we have made in the past in as much as we have been given the light to discover them. and make of this next year a far greater success along the av ues of spiritual, mor- al, and mental development.

Our thanks go out, then. to Fr. Cass for his labors. cxhortations, and cucouragcmenls directed in- wards our betterment: and also to his "little brother” who was prob- ably very instrumental in securing him as our Retreat Master. Al- though this writer did not take part in the girls' retreat. we have been given to understand that they un- derwent somewhat similar spirit- ual rlgors under the guidance of the massive hand but tender heart of Fr. Aylward. our bursar. It seems that at the close of this re- treat. he had to conclude that the co-eds "aren't so bad after all". thereby softening a bit a judgment

While you were wading through the last-printed account of the hap- penings on the campus here at Saint Dunstan's, dear reader (we jest). perhaps after the supper tab- had been cleared, the Saint Dunstan's Di-amutics Society was dimming the lights in the Alumni Gym for the presentation by the campus IL .plans of the suspence- filled three-act drama by James Beach, ”The Girl in the Rain." As the lights fell. tense eyes pierc- ed the palnt and mascara of mock faces to fall on the director. Fr. I-andligall. as he sought a bless mg on their work. Then the cur- tain parted and the action began. The scene that unfolded before the eyes of the audience was the: of the sitting room in the fashio: t 'e suburban residence of Alicia sn- derhill. where in a setting of mod- erll colors and periodic furniture. complete in (lcluil even to the hand- carved image of Falstaff on the mantle, the cast gave an intense and dramatic portrayal of the ef- fect of.a murder weapon on the proverbial Irizlngle or relationships. - In the order of their appea a.m., the cast was marle up of: Bernice Delory, who rendered an excellent starry-eyed portrayal of a new maid; Art Seaman. the butler who was, naturally. in on the plot and who could melt instantly from the usual strutting-robin pose when the action demanded: Rosella Devine. the society matron and lady of the house capable of L ' a lit- tle flustered when her son brought home his lady love; Marian Mac- Donald, the spritely. politely ever- in-a-hurry society reporter; Tony Spenccly. whose soft voice cares- ed his fiance while his heart lept for the mysterious stranger; Mary Cameron as the fiance whose man- ners were as wily as smily, the first construed but last accused criminal in the action: Larry Gal- lant us that subtle mllxiure of family physician and family firend; and Phil Pineau. the soldier on fur- lough who caused a rapid kange in the pace and direction or the action of the play.

Maureen Bcagan played the tit- le role as the girl in the rain, the mysterious stranger whose appear- ance on the stage inserted the first of the rapid changes of pace that lifted this plot from the average run of murdcrer's row and gave it a freshness of approach that the audience found very pleasing in- deed. Miss Beagan's performance was especially worthy of mention, for as a seasoned performer. she enhanced this production with her proficiency in the graces of the stage. Every movement. the slight- est quiver. every expression, the suppressed smile that could but shine in her eyes: every inflexlon, each syllable softened with feel- ing, was executed with a precis- ion that held her In constant com- munion with her audience. If isnlt easy for someone to look beauti- fully bedraggled. even in a mock situation, and we men are led to believe that the fairer of God's creatures under normal condit- Ions will go to great trouble and expense just to avoid such circum- stances.

Miss Brogan in this performance seemed to conquer this typically

without a purse, vallse, or any other means of carrying those wares which women find so neces- sary if they are to keep their best face forward. it would be reason- able to assume that until such a young lady were reunited with such wares, she would be without cos- metics or make-up of any kind. The fact that the girl in the rain was without any such make-up during lite entire play, and that she had to depend solely on those blessings normally given every innocent in- genue. added a refreshing note of realism to this portrayal.
