than their hospitality to strangers and kind- ness to clergymen of various denominations. The meeting held the other evening at the residence of Mr. W A. Leard displayed the jatter good quality ina marked degree. On this ocesion the Rev. John Goldsmith, who has labored with great acceptance on that circuit for nearly three years was the re- cipient of an address from the Methodists and temperance friends generally of the place, to which he gave a very suitable reply. Commonly speaking, addresses, no matter how kindly worded, unless accompanied by something in the shape of a gift are not as comforting to the addressed as they might be. In this in- stance, however, none of the essentials were wanting, for with the address was preseated a donation of thirty-five dollars ineash. fuch evidence of good will is not likely to be soon forgotten

Orrawa, April 11. Phe Controller of Customs has decided that coal oil and tcbacco may be properly classed as ship’s stores and entered free of duty ex warehouse,
Trouble Between Steamship Companies. New Yors, April 11.
Judge Addison Brown, in the United States District Cuurt, has decided that the North German Steamship Company is liable for half value of ship Fred B. Taylor, which the steamship Trave cut in two on June 22d, when 240 miles east of Sandy Hook, The decision is the result of libel brought by William Law and others, owners of Taylor. The Trave was out- ward boued and the Teylor on its way to this city from Havre. The vessels met in a fog bank and the Trave passed completely through the wreck. Judge Brown holds that the Trave was under too great speed considering the foggy weather atthe sametime. The Fred B. Taylor was equally tlamable, as the fog hora used was not such as is provided for by international regulations. The ship's
days before the collision, but Judge Brown says that a ship that makes an ocean trip without a duplicate fog horn is as unfit for @ voyage as a ship without a duplicate com- pass or tackling.
A Uniform Tariff.
Monrreat, April 11.
Clarke Wallace, Controller of Customs, had a very important interview yesterday with the members of the Board of Trade when the advisability of a uniformity in the tariff throughout the Dominion was strongly advocated. Hardware, dry goods, elothiers and druggists all pretended that in several western ports of entry goods were passed at a much lower rate than in Mon- treal. Wallace said that there was ground for great improvement and it was his firm determination to bring the improvement about
