Lady Churchill Anxious:

It was while stopping at Esrick Park, York, that Lady Churchill heard ot the heroic deeds of her son, Winston, in the affair of the Estcourt armored train and his reported capture. With- out delay she tock a train and hurried back to town, so as to be near when-— j ever any fresh news came.

A few days ago I was talking to one of his near relatives. She said: “We are very anxious about Winston. He goes as a newspaper correspondent, but we know he will go ahead of the army rather than with it, if he can. He is the most determined, pushing fellow in the world. After the Nile campaign, during which he was in the famous cavalry charge, he resigned his commission because he did not think there was going to be any more fight- ing. He wrote his book, which made a great success, and then fought a hard contesced parliamentary electton. We did not like his giving up his commis— sion after he had made so brilliant a beginning but he thought it was time to®be in parliament.

“*Vou have plenty of time,’ we told him, but he replied: Nota bit. My father was a cabinet minister at thirty—

six. If you want success you must begin ¢éarly. “When this war broke out he was

very bitter at having thrown up his commission, and was determined to get to the front, anyhow. This he was able to do by going as correspondent, for the Morning Post. ‘That ‘paper made him an offer of £1,000 for three months’ services.”

I have seen Lady Randolph Church- ill many times of late, and have seen how anxious she has been, for she knows only too well her Winston’s ad- venturous nature.

Views of a Cape Town Man.

G. M. Alexander, a Cape Town architect, arrived from South Africa a few days ago on his way round the world. Hesaid: “I shall return to the Cape nine months hence, in time to see the beginning of the war with the Boers. There has been no real war yet—nothing but skismishing, though we have lost many of our best men. We who live in that country have known that the Boers have been preparing for this conflict for many

years. England has not fully realized the extent of these preparations. We have lost men—not in war, for war has not yet be- gun—but in perliminaries. War will

begin when England’s fighting force arrives. With 60,000 men in the field, the natural result will not be long de- layed. The Boers will be driven from the Transvaal, and Cape Cojony, Na- tal, the Orange Free State and the Transvaal will be united.”

The splendid courage of the British troops under General White at Glencoe and Elandslaagte and the success achieved at a cost in killed and wound- ed when struggling against snperior numbers will do much, as the Ottawa Citizen remarks, to salve the wounds in the way that a triumphal march of superios army corps later on could not do. At Glencoe General Symons, with the conditions at Majuba Hill re- versed, defeated the enemy and died himself, with many other brave men, in doing it. That later on General Yule found the position untenable ow- ing to the concentration ofthe Boer columns and had to retire on the main

Memorial Service.

A memorial service was held at St. Luke’s cathedral Halifax for Lieut. C. C. Wood, a native of that city, who was killed in a reconnaisance near Orange River Junction. General Lord William Seymour and the principal officers of the garrison and militia forces were present in uniform. In the body of the church were massed the Halifax academy cadets and the children of Morris Street school, where asa boy Lieut. Wood attended. ‘The burial service of the Church of Eng-— land was sung with ornate ritual, as is common in St. Luke’s cathedral. Rev. E. P. Crawford sang the sentences. Garrison Chaplain Buliock read the scripture lesson. A sermon was preach- ed by Bishop Courtney standing at the Episcopal throne. Ilis lordship spoke of the sympathy from the wide dominion and the wider British empire that unites with that of Halifax people for the family of him who so nobly died fighting the empire’s battles for justice and right. He died from wounds in his head and chest with his face to the foe. Lieut. Wood was held up as a pattern to the young in his obedience and his devotion to duty.
