in with good fares, notwithstanding un- favorable reports about the catch, and the market is fairly supplied, The trips run mostly No. 2, which make No. 3 and No. 1 rather scarce. Inspected cargoes have been selling at $3.50 and $4 for No. 3, $5.50 and $6 for No. 2, and $13 and $14 for No. 1. At most of the outports, $4, $6 and $14 per barrel are the figures asked for 3's, 2's and l’s. Separate lots of Shore No. 3 are very firm at $4, and some holders ask $4.125 in large lots. Jobbing lots command $4 50. No. 2 vary as to quality. Dealers generally get $7 for fair size orders, and $7.50 and $8 is asked for extra No. 2. No. 1 are scarce, and dealers get from $15 to $18 for ordinary quality. At the advance asked, trade is not so brisk, but all the packing houses are fairly busy with some orders ahead. Codfish have been arriving more freely and prices are easier. Sales of dry Bank at $3 50 for large and $2 50 per gtl for medium, and pickle cured Bank at $3 for Jarge and $2 50 for medium. Pickled cured Shores rule a $2 50 and $3 50 for medium and large, and dry Shore at $4 per qtl, Heke, Haddock and Pollock are scarce and nominal. 4a,
Terrible Dynamite Explosion.
A fearful explosion of dynamite occurred at Lakefield, Ont., on the 4th. A load of one thovsand pounds for the Trent Valiey’s works at Burleigh, drawn by two horses, in charge of two men named Morton and Simmons, exploded while passing through a dense tamarack swemp. Holes sixty feet across and eight or ten feet deep mark the
spot where the explosion took place. Trees for fifty yards on both sides were cut down Pieces of ironwork of the wagon, harness and hodies of
men and horses have been picked up half a mile from the spot. None larger than a man’s hand have been found. The shock in the village was terrific, people deserting their houses in dread, as no one could tell the cause, there being no steam boilers used in or near the village and no explosives stored. The shock was felt for miles around the surrounding country, it being generally attributed to earthquake until the cause of the occnrrence became known. At Campbellford, a neighboring town, a distinct vibration of the earth was felt, plate glass windows were shaken open, Windows swayed to and fro, and sidewalks
were seen to rise and fall.
