FRANCIS BAIN, NATURALIST

And still they gaz'd, and still the wonder grew That one small head could carry all he knew.

That Francis Bain must be regarded as the Island's most distinguished native—son naturalist, there can be no doubt. That his name today is recognized by a scant handful of Islanders is also true but lamentably deplorable. Bain had limited formal education and as a naturalist might be characterized asa self-taught savanta Fortunately much of his work survives today and is available to those who desire to know more about this great student of Nature. Author of two books as well as some sixty scientific papers he managed to maintain daily records of many of nature's activities. >

As the story goes, Bain set out from York Point in a horse and sleigh one winter day to Governor's Island on a geology expedition. The horse fell through the ice. Bain pulled the horse out; it appeared dead, but recovered from shock shortly. Bain continued on his expedition as planned. Such dedication is to be admired in any time!

He published his first book - "THE NATURAL HISTORY OF PRINCE EDWARD

ISLAND" in 1890. This work was subsequently approved for use in all Island schools.

He also found time to operate a farm and raise a family. He married Caroline Clark of Cavendish in 1876 and three daughters and six sons were born of this union. -
