FEEDING HORSES ON OLD POTATOES

It would appear that there is something more than a modicum of danger in freding old pota'oes te horses. Some time ago we referred to the mysterious deaths of twelve horses owned ty Mr. A.D. Wells, Baker Farm, Wallingford. Ai the time the deaths were shrouded in mystere, but at last a ray of light has been sled mpon the cause. which should act asa warving to farm. +s and others similarly situated. Ip agreat many parts of the country the feeding of ,olatoes ix a common, arfd we believe wholesome enongh, practice. But if these potatoes are staje, and merely used up for food becanse they cannot protitably be sold, then there is a certain amount of danger incurred by the r use. Mr. Wells fed his hurses on boiled barley, beans, and potatoes twelve months old. The deathe cold not be attributed to poisoning in the ordinary, nor could thev be traced to the beans or barley. Prof. McFadyen, how- ever, conducted an experiment with an old cab horse at the Royal Veterinary Col- lege, and his investigations clearly estab- lished the complicity of the potatoes as the cause of death. When boiled, the potatoes easily broke in two, and occasion- ally turned color. Jt will therefore be wise policy on the part of farmers to clearly comprehend the condition of the potatoes they wish to feed to their horses and feed moderately.—Farmer and Stock Breader, London, Eng.
