A SAD ACCIDENT occurred off Argyle, Yar- mouth County,N.S.,on Sunday, by which Mr. Michael Wrayton, aged 71; his son Lovell, aged 19; and his daughter Cassie, aged 17, lost their lives.

ONLY three schooners are now loading pro- duce at this port, viz: the Laodamia, the En- terprise, and the Mary Jane. The first is loading for Newfoundland, by Mr. Donald MeMillan, of West River; while the last two are loading for the Halifax market by Mr. P.

Joun Brows, a boy about fourteen years of age, was on Tuesday evening arrested by Officer Cameron for searching countrymen’s carts with intent to steal. He was sentenced by the Stipendiary Magistrate on Wednesday to one month’s imprisonment for vagrancy. Yet another instance showing the want of a Reformatory.
Tue third of the series of public Temper- ance meetings was held in the Division Room, Queen street, on Tuesday evening. The speakers were Messrs. Swift, Beer, Mobba, Millner and R. Scott. Excellent and appro- priate temperance music interspersed the ad- dresses. Eleven more persons signed the Pledge. The fourth meeting will be held this (Wednesday) evening. Free to all.
Ox Turspsy night a daring attempt was made to burglarize the tailoring establishment of Mr. Leslie J. Williams, which is. situated on Queen's street. The burglars, by means of a bar, endeavored to remove a shutter from the front door. As it was securely bolted, they failed. They then commenced removing the ribs of the shutter, but while doing this they were evidently frightened off by the ap- proach of some person.
Tur Montreal evening papers of Dec. Sth give long accounts of the abduction of Amanda Trudeau, adopted daughter of a wealthy pro- prietoress, Madame St. Marie, of St. Andre street on Satarday night. She was a hand- some girl, 18 years old,and had been sent ona message to one of Madame Xt. Marie’s tenants, when three young men, respectably dressed, geized her, clapped plaster over her mouth and applied seme drug which rendered her un- conscious. When she regained consciousness she was being borne along by @ carter m his sleigh towaris Madame St. Marie's house, where she was left four hours after abduction. An analysis of a portion of the plaster left sticking to her hand showed it to be gum of strong adhesive properties dissolved in earbolic acid, and there were also traces of chloroferm. This girl has been in the habit of collecting rent, and ons theory is that the object of the fiends was robbery. ‘The truth of another theory will not be tested until she has re- covered sufficiently to submit. to medical ex- amination. She is still suffering severely.

: INDIAN AND THE Marpen.—Max Ly- Bd prairie scout, who lived at the White River Agency a year anda half, and knew the Meekers intimately, tells this story toa reporter ot the Debuque Times: **Quray was 10 love with the eldest daughter of Agent Meeker, and I think that had this not been the case every one of the Meeker family would have been butchered. He often told me that he loved the white girl, and it made him feel badly to think that he could never marry her. I hive seen Ouray follow her around and watch over heras if she were?a child. He would do anything to please her. Ouray's
sister knew that her brother loved the Meeker
family and so took good care that no harm should come to them, I was there when the women were brought back, and Ouray was s0 happy that he rushed up to the Meeker girl snd shook her hand for an hour. He tried hard to stop her from weeping, but she said, ‘Ouray, you knew this trouble was coming al the time, and I can never forgive you.’ I learn now that he is doing all in his power to to bring the bad Indians in.”
