City Ijlospital Graduates Addressed By Dr. Shaw

"No longer do we think of edu- cation as having its chief merit in the fact that -we cannot use it." Dr. L. W. Shaw, Deputy Minister ' of Education. told the graduates of the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nurses last evening speaking at the formal graduation exercises, Dr. Show declared that a. class . of this kind was "perhaps the fin- ; est possible example of the results of a program of education that combines the cultural and practi- cal to a ranarkable degree.

The background of general edu- cation required for entrance to the nursing professioi has been in- creased in recent years to provide an adequate foundation for the tremendously important education based upon the newer concepts of medicine and nursilld. the Slllllk" noted.

"Perhaps one of the moat note- worthy discoveries in respect to education," he added, "has been the realization that the whole pcrson goes to school and not Just I the brain. The older idea was that

the school should concern itself iwith packing the brains with licnowledge and with trainins lvllt pupil in the skills of reading. writ- ing and arithmetic. of course. lrljlls continues to be an important part of education but educators have come to realize that the chlld brings not only his brain to school but his emotions, his body and his social attitudes.

Dr. Shaw went on to stress the importance of nurses having inter- ests outside those of their pro- fessions, and of developing their personalities fully and completely.

and teachers of West Kent School.

A newer and brighter understand-

ing had developed as a result of

these gatherings.

The sum of 3100.00 had been raised by the Association for prizes for the graduating class at west Kent this year.

A report was then given by Mrs. Darrell MacGuire, on the progress of the school closing conimiillee. The thanks of the meeting was extended to Mrs. MacGuire, Dr. L. E. Prowse and Mrs. Walter Hynclman for their

On motion of the meeting. the secretary was requested to write Mr. Roland Taylor, a valued member, regretting his illness and wishing him a speedy re- covery.

The secretary. Mr. Arthur L. Wright, then ta-bled his report, covering the highlights of the )car's activities. He also streesed the value of this organization and its constant aim, which is to pro- mote culture among the students and allow them certain advantages which had not been available to the parents. . ,
