The following review of the 1940 activities of the Provincial Depart- ment of Public Works was supplied by Mr. L. B. McMillan, Deputy Munster of Public Works:

Pﬂvillli-Fblzrieen miles of as- phalt pavement was laid on the St. Peters Road between Morcll Bridge and the town of Souris. This mmpletes the hard surfaclng of the highway between Charlottetown and Souris.

Sub-Gradlngz- Two miles of aub~ grading was done on the St. Pct- ers Road before the pavement was

Heavy maintenance on secondary roads included the ditching and grading of about one ‘hundred and twenty miles and scraping practic- ally all the roads in the country sev- eral times.

At Falconwood a new steam bol1~ er was installed and the erection of a new laundry was started.

Other Bridge Workr- Consisted ofrcpltlrlng the larger wooden bridges and the building of about 45 new wood-en bridges and 70 new wooden culverts. There were about 90 steel culverts placed of sizes varying from 1 1-2 to 5 feet in d1- alneter. The larger bridge repair joba consisted of replanking the arch of Holdimand Bridge, Egmont Bay, grading and railing Glllarfs Bridge near Alberton, leplanklng Clark's Bridge, Wilmot Valley and rebuilding the arch of the Whale Back Bridge, Malpeque.

The fall storms and high tides were destructive to the approaches of many of the larger bridges, and n lot of work was required in stone work, pole work, gravelling, etc, to keep tllcnl passable. Among othcr bridges rcpzlrcd in this way was Goffs, Roxbury; lvfagglscnﬂs, Mill River; Grand River, Lot 16; Quag- mire. Wellington: Doyle's, Tignlsh; and Gully. Ebbsflcct.

Tile maintenance oi‘ the high- WlLVS was looked after by means cf 3 motor patrol units which were kept in cclltinucus service scrap- ili: and 12' Tiling. A new bridge was erected on the Beach Grove Inn Road. This bridge was constructed with creo- sote piles and caps with steel I beams and pllmk top. This also in- cluded about 400 feet of new ap- preach.

A new creosote deck was put on the Hillsboro Bridge and a complete new slip was erected for the Rocky Point ferry at the ferry wharf. Several large bridges were repair-

In continuing this policy of giv- ing all available aid 1n equipment and co-operation 1n keeping the roads to the airports opal, the De- parfmenl; increased its snow removal equipment by the purchase of a 150 Horse Power Walters snow fighting truck equipped with the latest type plow. This new unit will be used for the heavier snow fighting duty.
