He Found That Some of His Slaves Were Masons and Set Them Free.
“T guesa you never heard of how Jeffer son Davis freed a lot of niggers long befor: the thought of freeing the blacks in thir country was anything more than a chi- merical dream in the minds of some New England Puritans, did you?” inquired Major L. H. Carson, of Nashville, Tenn., ofa St. Louis reporter. ‘It may be « fairy tale, or it may not, but, anyhow, i: will bear repeating:
“As I received the story direct from my grandfather, who claimed to know all the circumstances, it ran ahout this way While a young man, and soon after mov ing from his native home in Kentucky to his plantation in Mississippi, Jeff Davis bought a cargo of blacks, just brought over from Africa by a slave-trader, who ran the blockade and landed them in New Orleans. While they were working in the cotton fields one day, Mr. Davis wbserved his new negroes making Masonic signs of distress to the overseer. That individual, not be- ing a Mason, thought the negroes were only carrying ona system of signals pre paratory to revolt, and was ebout to have them whipped.
Mr. Davis stopped this proceeding. He tested the negroes thorougily, and, to his amazement, discovered that they wer Third-Degree Masons, though brongiat from the very heart of Africa. Being » Mason himself, you can understand that ie Jost no time in giving them their freedom and the choice of either returning to Africa or remaining on his estate until he could provide for them in some other way. Most of them shipped to Africa at Davis's ex- pense, thongn some of them remained with him until the end.

An English scientist has devoted years of study to the development of the char- acter of animals. The subject is an inter esting one, no doubt, but Mr. Tarton seems to be gifted with an unusually vivid im- agination. He took hens’ eggs, for ex ample, and had them hatched by crows, falcons, owls and magpies, He Saye froin his observations that the male birds thu hatched partook of the qualities of the» respective hatchers. A rooster hatched by a falcon is described as showing abnorma Gerceness and daring, while anothe, hatched by an ow] was cowaid}y and shy, those hatched by the magpie being char. acterized as hopping about constantly, as if endowed with unnatural gaiety.
A Tall Sheep Stwury.
Some extraordinary but well-authenti- cated stories of the Back of France are re- lated. One day a sheep ate up a 100-franc note belonging to a butcher. The butcher ran into the house of a friend, seized a gun and shot the sheep. He had noseuner done this than the owner of the gun rush- edup. ‘‘That was an expensive shot of yours for me,” he caid. “‘What do you mean?” asked the butcher. ‘‘Well,” said the other, ‘I had 70 francs in bille hidden in the barrel of that gun!” The sheep's carcass was pretty thoroughly searched,

i, “From and after the passing of this Act every casual trader pot permanently residing inthis Province doing business within this Province, commonly known as “ Commercial Travellers,” and every person not permanent- ly residing in this Province, and who settle either for himself or any other person any goods, wares or merchandize in this Provinee, or solicits or canvasses for orders either for himseif or any other person for the sale, ex- change or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandize w.thin this Provinee, either by the production of samples, photographs, cata- logues, printed or written matter, or simpy by word of mouth without the production of sampies, photographs, catalogues, printed or written matter, shall, before he or she enters upon the basiness of so selling any goods, wares or merchandize, or soliciting or cap- vassing for such orders, pay to the Provinciai Treasurer of this Province an anaual licen-¢ fee or direct tax of fifteen dollars.”
2 “Upon payment of the said license fe> or direct tax, the said Provincial Treasurer shall grant a license authorizing the person therein named tosell goods, wares and mer- chandize in this Provinee, and to solicit and canvass for orders for the sale, exchange cr purchase of goods, wares and merchandize w'thin this Provinee. Such license shell be g:anted and remain in force for the s one year following the date upon which the said license shall be granted and no longer.”
3. “ Any such Commercial Traveller or son not permanently residing in this Pre vince as aforesaid, who, after the passing of this Act, shall sell any goods, wares or mer- chandiz®, or solicit or canvass for orders for the sale. exchange or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandize in any manner afore- said within this Province without hayt first paid the said license fee or direct tax, obtained the said licen-e, shall for each and every Occasion upon which he or she shall sell any goods, wares or merehandize, or soi'- citor canvass foran order for the sale, ex- change or purchase of any goods, wares or meichandize as aforesaid, be liable to pay the sum of two hundred dollars tothe sid Pro- vincial Treasurer.”
This Act 1s now in force.
