We’re not _ CU Pping out

Let’s begin by saying once more that the Canadian Federation of Students does not own CUP, that funny little word you keep seeing at the beginning of stories in the Netted Gem.

You remember CUP —- it’s those three little letters that make you sick to you stomach and act as a signal to avoid reading this story at all costs.

CUP is not a rating. on a story. The acronym hides the reality of the Canadian University Press, a cooperative of 53 student newspapers across Canada.

The Nerred Gem, as of January 1984, is a full member of CUP, pays membership fees, can vote at conferences, attempts to adhere to -a CUP Statement of Principles, receives national advertising each week, and mails out papers to the other member papers.

So what’s so scary about a CUP byline?

Why don’t you want to read about what’s going on at other campuses in the Maritimes and other regions?

Why don’t you want to know what’s happening to post- ‘secondary education in other places, and how students are trying or neglecting to fight cutbacks, university injustice, the closed job market, boredom, and the student loan situation?

What you don’t know might kill you, your faculty, or your campus.

But just because we let you know some of the things —— and by no means all of the important ones, though we try — doesn‘t mean we don’t care what’s happening here at home.

Since the UPEI student newspaper changed its style, format, and emphasis in October, I983, its policy has always been “UPEI events first, then CUP as filler.”

We think it’s important filler, and meaty.

But the fact remains that students have been demanding more local. and less national coverage.

Fine.

So cover it with and for us. -

It doesn’t have to be a complete, long-term commitment. You can call us up at Extension 387 with fast-breaking story ideas. You can type up a report on something im- portant you society’s been doing. You could write us some humour — we want to be funny, honestly!

Or you could just hang around the office and drink stale coffee and criticize us when we don’t quite reach perfection.

And if someday you suddenly realize that your muse is begging you to write — Hallelujah, another one saved.

The role of the Speaker of the U.P.E.I. Student Council is to preside at all general assemblies and council meetings, to interpret the constitution and its bylaws, and to enforce the rules of parliamentary procedure ac- cording to Roberts Rules of Order.

With respect to the cases of Councillors Mike Connolly and Kenny Baker, the issue is clear cut.

Councillor Connolly missed a total of four council meetings which in turns calls for automatic impeachment under Article XXII, Section 9.

Councillor Baker was not an active member of the U.P.E.I. Student Union and was thus unable to hold office within the U.P.E.I. Student Union. 'An “active member” is classified as a

student who is taking three or more courses. Counculor

I felt a great sense of accomplishment and pride in the elections; it’s not just the winning that feels good, but the participation by so many.
