Constructions were mixed. Domin- ion Bridge and Building Products advanced fractions but Asbestos and General Steel Wares sliPWd slightly. Also down narrowly were Canadian Car preferred, Shawinigari. St. Law- rence C°PDoration and Imperial To- bacco.

A few utilities displayed strength. Brazilian gained 1-2 while Montreal Power and Power Corporation each advanced 5-8. Smelters and Hudson Bay Mining in the metals both firmed fractions.

TORONTO, Feb. 1——(CP)-In the quietest session since October. the Toronto stock exchange registered a. modest advance today. Base metal shares were down a half point at the close but the industrlals added .37, the golds 28 and western oils .06 in the index. Only 233,000 shares were traded. and much of the turn- over was in the penny golds.

Lake Shore closed 1-2 down at 28 and other senior golds were steady. The close was off narrowly for Au- nor. Coniaurum, East Malartic. AETI-Addl-BOII, Pamour and Sigma and in the penny list losses of 2 to 3 cents were netted by Brouian, Canadian Malai-tic. Chesiervllle, Francoeur. Paymasier, Sand River and Senator.

Profit-taking on its recent rise canted Steep Rock 8 cents to 2.21. Penci Orelllc was another weak spot ll’i the base metal 11st, losing 9 cents to close at 1.75 and losses of 1-4 in l-2 were netted by Noranda, Nickel and Smelters.
