NEWS AND NOTES

APRIL MEETING REPORT. On April 7th a good crowd of some 27 members ‘ and guests turned out to hear Al Smith of the Canadian Wildlife

Service in Sackville, New Brunswick. A National Film Board Film on Great Blue Herons was shown. Shot in Quebec, the film presented many

of the intimacies of day—to—day life for a Great Blue Heron. Al also presented the results of last summer's heron surveys in the Maritime provinces. The evening was a very enjoyable one, and generated considerable-interest among members for this year's heron surveys.

MAY MEETING. The last of this season‘s meetings of the Natural

History Society will be held on Tuesday May 5th at 8:00 p.m. in

Room 47 on the third floor of the Provincial Health Building. The program will feature a showing of the slides submitted to the society's nature slide contest. Prizes will be awarded and lunch will be served. Come and bring a friend.

HERON CENSUS. Distribution of heron census areas will take place at the May meeting. Please indicate your willingness to census an area to Rosemary Curley, either at the meet- ing or before Ma 31. Phone 892- 0221 for more details.

NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY FILM NIGHT. The Natural History Society will ‘ sponsor a nature film night Tuesday May 12 at MacKinnon Lecture Theatre in Holland College, as part of Environment Days activities. Films

will be shown from 6 pm to 10 pm. The early part of the evening will feature a children's program with topics such as killer whales, the insect world, and cartoon birds. These films range in length from

5 to 15 minutes. About 7230 (the program is not yet finalized) a feature film for family viewing will be shown. Short films for adults will follow with a second feature film at 9 pm. Of special interest will be two presentations on local subjects, 'The Piping Plover' by Winnie Cairns and 'The Atlantic Coast', a Council of Maritime Premiers production with local flavour. Coffee and kool-aid will be served. Check your local newspapers for a detailed listing of films and times during Environment Days, May 9 — 16. There will be no admission charge.

JUNE FIELD TRIP. On Saturday, June 13 an all day field trip to the Tyne Valley area will be held. Hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Geoff Robinson assisted by other society members, the trip will be an opportunity

to visit and explore the plant, animal and bird life of a very scenic part of the province. Meet at the YMCA in Charlottetown at 8 am for transportation. Bring lunch, binoculars, field guides, etc.

NEST RECORDS SCHEME. Don't forget that this is the season to be looking for birds' nests and completing nest record cards. For the list of prizes being offered to encourage this worthwhile project, refer to last month's newsletter. Nest record cards are available from the newsletter editor and should be turned in to the society no later than Sept. 15, 1981.
