She had taken ill, and sitting down, had be- come so badly chilled that she could not ‘get up. She had a narrow escape and weuld no doubt have frozen to death if not dis- covered when she was.

OTEAWA CORRESPONDENCE.

AN INTERESTING ADDRESS—MR. MEIKLE IN OTTAWA—A PRESBYTERIAN ON THE JESUIT BILL.

Orrawa, Feb. 25.

I had the pleasure on Saturday of listen- ing tu a most interesting address given by Mr. Davin, M. P., to several members of the Press Gallery, who interviewed him in one of the lobbies. The subject matter of his discourse was Rationalism, and he told the story of the development of that heresy in glowmg language, interspersed with classical quotations, and illustrated his theme by innumerable instances in ancient history, showing the formation of the Egyptian, Assyrian, Judiac, Grecian, Ro- man and Christian theologies. it was a genuine treat, and the ‘* Press” were highly delighted.

On Sunday I went to hear Mr. Meikle’s address to men. It was given in the New Opera House, which was packed with young and old men. Mr. Meikle is look- ing somewhat fatter than he did when on the Island. His voice has greatly improved in volume, and his solo singing is very effec- ; tive.

The Hospital Fire.

AnovT twenty minutes to ten o’clock this morning the alarm sounded for a fire in the Prince Edward Island Hospital Building on St. Peter’s Koad, near Euston Street. The fire started in the room of one of the servants in the upper flat, and was caused by a defective flue. Before the fire was discovered the flames had penetrated through t« he roof, and by the time the firemen rrived on the scene the roof of the old wing was im a blaze. There was a gcod deal . of delay and bu: “1g before the firemen got down to work, .he hose bursting several times, greatly retarding operations. How- ever, when they settled down to work the fire, which was making great progress dur- ing the delay, was soon got ander control, and in a short time was subdued. In the meantime the more helpless of the patients had been removed, as had also a good deal of the furniture. The roof of the old wi was burnt badly, but that of the new di not suffer to any very great extent. The walls of some of the rooms in the upper flat were torndown, aswere also the plastering and lathing beneath the stairway. The whole building was, however, badly dam- aged by water, almost every room in’ the place being flooded.

The alarm was telephoned Central Office from the hospital, and in about twenty seconds after receiving the information, Chief Engineer Large was adtised of the fire, and in less than two minutes after he received word Silsby hose reel was on its way to the scene. Such promptness is com- mendable, and shows clearly the great ad- vantage that would result from the intro- duction of an electric alarm. However, no matter how promptly the alarm is given and how much water we have, if the hose and other apparatus are not in good work- ing order, the work of the firemen will be considerably retarded.

The Hospital building was insured for $2500, and the furniture for $500, in one of the companies represented by Mr. F. W. Hyndman.

Ar the public meetings held in King’s County during the last Domiaion election, Dr. Robertson was wont te grow quite pathetic over the pork question. He said that the Dominion Government, if they wished to be considered consistent, should raise the duty upon American pork in order to give Canadian pork raisers a chance of supplying the home market. So far, so good. But what do we find him do- ing the other day when his party proposed to let American barley come into Canada

The Fishery Bounty.

Sir,—Dr. McIntyre, it would seem by late reports from Ottawa, is anxious to do away with the Fishery Bounty. He does not say so himself on the floor of the House. That would be an effort quite too much for him at the present time. But he told Mr. Davies, and Mr. Davies told the House for him, that the bounty was of no service to fishermen,—that many of them spent more time in looking for it than it is worth, and that the sooner it is done away with the better. It is neeliessto say that such statements are intended to injure our fisherman, and should be repudiated by every well wisher of that hardy and de- serving class. If Dr. MeIntyre would do the rivht thing he would ask that the present bounty be increased at least two fold. CITIZEN.
