further to amend the Dominion Lands Act, 1883. The bill passed through committee, _ Hon. Mr. McLalan moved the House into committee to consider resolutions authorizing the Government to receive back the twenty million Joan to the Canada Pacific Railway.

Biake attacked the Government in a long speech, declaring that the Govern- men's statements about the population in the Northwest were fallacies; that the C. P. R. oaght néver to have been pushed for- ward with the speed it was, and that the money paid to the company had not been received back from the sale of land as promised during the debate.

After recess, Mr. Mackenzie entered the chamber and was greeted with great applause, whieh both sides heartily joined. This is in strong contrast with the almost complete absence from} any sign of wel- come to Sir John by the opposition on his entering to the House first time after his illness.

L. & S. Issrirure.—Last evening Mr. W, §. Stewart took up the Phenomena of Tides, and laid before the audience with great dis- tinctness the different explanation of thedouble tides that are afforded by a consideration of the moon and gun’s attraction. In reviewing the different explanations given by scientists, Mr. Stewart did not commit himself to any expression of belief in any one of them. He showed that all theorists up to the present have failed in satisfactorily accounting for tides as we fiod them, and complimented Mr. Newson on his departure from the old ruts of science in this matter, and expressed a hope that the polaric theory would explain what was not yet explained about the Phenomena of Tides. A lively discussion followed in which the President, Dr. Leeming, Messrs. Newson, Weeks and others engaged.

We regret that the Protestant Union views the despatch of Earl Granville in a light which is certainly not justified by the strong and elear language in which His Lordship presses the matter upon thé attention of the Dominion Government. The statement of the Union that the delegates went all the way to London to learn that the Queen had no power by statute or otherwise, under the con- stitution of Canada, to give any direction in the matter, is quite erroneous. The delegates knew well before they left the Island that the Imperial Government could not, under the statutes of Canada or otherwise, coerce the Government with respect to this matter ; bat it does not follow, as the Union implies, that their mission was all in vain.

Tus Patriot is concerned because Hon, Mr. Sullivan has referred to Hon. D. Laird as an elder, and implies that Mr. Sullivan has insulted Mr. Laird and, indeed, the whole Presbyterian Church by so doing. Whether or not Mr. Sullivan has alluded to Mr. Laird as an elder, we know not ; but suppose he has, there is nothing disgrace- ful about the office or name, that a man should feel himself insulted by being call ed an elder. If, however, a man deliber- ately gives currency to erroneous and slan- derous statements he disgraces and insults the office and position. There’s the rub ! Possibly this may account for the Patriot's anger because the Hon. David Laird has been called an elder. It’s an old saying that ‘*a guilty conscience needs no accuser.”

OTICE is hereby given by the under- signed, two of the corporate members of the above Company, that the required num- ber of shares in the ahove Company having been subscribed, a gensral meeting of the members and stockholders of the above Com- pany will be held at the office of RR. FITZ- GERALD, Solicitor, in the Cameron Block, in Charlottetown, Province of Prince Edward Island, at the hour of eleven o'clock of the forenoon, on TUESDAY, the eightventh day of MAY next, A. D., 1886, for the purpose of making, ordaining and establishing such bye- laws, ordinances and regulations for the good management of the affairs of the Corporation as they ehall deem necessary, and for the pur- pose of choosing seven directors, being share- holders and members cf the Corporation, under and in pursuance of the rules and regu- lations contained in the statute of the said Province, incorporating the sbove Company.
