Old Before My Time - Editorial by Sean Brady, Eic

Sometime during the past 6-8 months, when I was- n’t looking or paying enough attention, | became old. I’m not talking about physical condition — physic is all about mileage, care, and maintenance — or hair loss — I started to go grey long ago. I’m — talking about mindset.

Little clues that this had begun to happen appeared long ago, but were vastly ignored, likely due to an increase in forgetfulness. Certain moments do stick out in my mind though, such as the day | got excit- ed driving home when I heard on the radio via Magic 93’s Sobeys update that lean ground beef was on sale and I realized I had freezer space to be able to stock up.

"Yippee!. The GOOD hamburger's on sale" I remember thinking, then shaking my head at myself for the remainder of the journey home.

Other moments include realizing during the first day of Computer Science 151 that I did not know what HTML, Yahoo, or Google were, and thinking a WYSIWYG web editor was a brand name. Or the time I witnessed the electric meter spinning like a merry-go-round from some Stephen King novel, and my reaction was to storm into the house and start shutting circuit breakers off.

The final nail in the coffin that sealed my fate was the day I subconsciously put ‘leafy green vegeta- bles’ in my grocery kart because I had been hear- ing about their nutritional benefits repeatedly on health shows and news/variety show food corners. What I had done didn’t really sink in until I was half finished my shopping.

“What the hell did I grab that for?” ran through my mind as I set the boxes of Frosted Flakes, Corn Pops, and Fruit Loops beside the head of Romaine lettuce. I don’t care for lettuce as such, but Romaine | absolutely detest. For some reason though I had grabbed it anyway, remembering hav- ing heard somewhere that the darker the green, the better it was for you.

I, Sean Brady, ex professional pastry chef with an insatiable sweet tooth and chocolate craving, ex apprentice to a chef who was the largest user of 36% cream this side of Montreal, was subcon- sciously trying to eat healthy. Sacrilege!

Oh well. It’s not like I’m over the hill — I’m only 26. I guess it’s more an act of maturing than getting old. Still, I can’t help but feel like I’ve transitioned into another stage of life, and realize that with my education drawing to a close, another large transi- tion is just around the corner. For now though, I'll . keep taking advantage of the stage I’m in now. One doesn’t want to grow up too quickly now do they?
