Local Election Laws.
Srxcz the last general election several amendments have been made to the election laws which it would be well to bear in mind.
The Acts in existence prior to the passage of “ the Registration and Ballot Act” have been revived, and that Aci has been re- pealed.
The absolutely new regulations particularly upon the mode of voting. __
“Open voting” is again the rule in Local Elections, thongh the Ballot will still be used in Dominion Elections
The place for voting is to be a room or building, convenient of access, with a door for the admittance of voiers, and having, if
bear
possible, another door, through which they may leave after having voted. — At the time of voting, no one is to be
permitted within the apartment except the candidates and their azgents—the agents not to exceed two in noiaber for each can- didate, tegether with the presiding officer, the official poll clerk, one poll clerk for each candidate, and the man who votes.
No flags, ribbena or distinctive party color er signal is to be permitted within the district, or to be worn or carried, be- tween the eighth day before the nomination and the day following the close of the poll.
The Sheriff may sub-divide the polling districts, as under the Registration and | Bal'ot Act.
In the towns, the qualification of electors is as follows.—(1) Resicence fur cne year; and (2) in the polling division for one month; and, (3) for franchise voters, pay- | ment of any taxea which may be levied | during the previous year.
The Mechanics Meeting.
We regret that ‘‘ the Mechanics Meeting” held last evening, broke up in disorder ; for had the discussion, so well opened by John Tanton, Esq , been continued, we feel certain that a reselution approving of the candidature of Messrs. MceLzop & Brake would have been carried by a majority of three toone. This will be the more evident when we consider the cause of the disturbance, which wes simply a
reposition to nominate Messrs. Henry Dettels and Lemuel Poole, two highly intelligent master mechanics,—who as men are highly regarded in the community,— who, as politicians, we well know to be prominent supporters of the Oppositionists. The proposition was laughed at. The meeting would not listen to it. Some, in their excitement, even went so far as to say that it was a trick concocted by Tue Examiner, for the very purpose of break- ing up the meeting. Fora paper that has no editor, it will be admitted that Tre EX4MiNER gives the Oppositionists a good deal of trouble; but Tue Examiner empha- ticaily denies this impeachment, and re- grets the occurrence ef a scene in which strong language and warm feelings were indulged inand displayed by men for whom Tae Examiner has personally a high re- gerd.

‘*fliis Worship the Mayor informed the Board that on Thursday last, the tenth of October, he had attended, in company with Councillors Morris, Yates, Hooper and Beer, the public sale by auction of a certain portion of Spring Park property, situate in the Com- mon of Chaclottetown on the Malpeque Road, and that be had purchased two pieces or par- cels of the said property, being number 11 and 12, on account and behaif of the City of Charlottetown, one of the ssid plots contain- ing the seurce of the spring of water, and measuring one acre and one perch, was knocis- ed down for the sum of £200 and the other

Meeting at Lot 66.
At a meeting held at South Shore, Lot 65, on Saturday last, Mr. Alexander C. Shaw was unanimously chosen as the can- didate for the South End, in conjunction with D. McKay, Esq.
The people of Lot 65 are doing wisely in taking a farmer with them for their candi- date, avd it will be seen that the selection is most excellent. Mr. Shaw is a man of no small ability, one of the best platform speakers in Queen’s County, and has been for years past working hard for improve. ments in West River with no small succeas, as witness—the steamer on West River, the bridge, and latterly the docks at Rocky Point, ete.
It will be reevilected that Mr. Shaw was
lerk of the County Court, Bonshaw, for several years, where he gave suitors no small satisfaction, and received the compli- ments of Judges Palmer and Alley, before large assemblages, in open court, for his skill and aptitude in performing his duties as clerk. .
Ast a farmer, the people have chosen one whose interests are identical with their own, and who will see to roads and bridges to more satisfaction than ene who never visits the District but at the eve of elec- tion, and one who cannot point cut one single improvement on West River obtained by him during the six years he has repres sented them.

A large meeting of the electors of Bald- win’s Kead and adjacent districis was held at the Schoolhouse, on Monday evening,the 24th instant.
Mr. P. J. D. Epmonps was called to the chair, and the undersigned appointed secretary.
Hon. Mr. Frravson, being called on, addressed the meeting, and, having spoken at considerable length on his covrection with the District, thanked the electors for the cordial support given hin, and inti- mated his intention of withdrawing from this District and contesting Fort Augustus in the interest of the Liberai-Conzervative Party.

Therefore Resolved, That while we deeply regret the loss of the services of ope who has so ably and faithfully represented us for the last four years, we feel bound to express our admiration of the uuseltish sprit shown by Mr. Ferguson in leaving a district where vic tory for him would be cert in, to enter upon a more difficult contest in support of his party and ours, and

A Stirring Appeal to Liberai- Conservatives.
To the Editor of the Lcaminer.
S1x,—The Liberal-Conservative Party of this Province, have fought and won many a fiercely-contested battle with their opponents in days gone by, end there are meny indications that the same spirit of independence and _ intelligence, which marked their actions in the past, will not be wanting in the present contest.
The Opposition—it would be a misnomer to cail them Liberals—are depending for success ip this city, as we!l as in the coun- try districts, solely on divisions which may, perchance, spring up among the adherents of the Liberal-Conservative Party. They know well that their black record of a short and inglorions career, during which they levied the ‘‘ Tax curse,” and otber heavy burdens, grievous to be borne, on the shoulders of the taxpayers of this country, is eo fresh and green in the metmvries of the electorate that it Would be a hepeless task ever to expect a renewal of that confidence which they so shamefully abused and be- trayed. ‘Their only ray of hope, therefore, is to create divisiens and dissensi the supporters of the governing p: this Province.
This nefarious work they have b?eun in town and country, with all the iitrigue, malice, and ‘*‘ organized hypocrisy” which it is possible to corceive any band of un- scrupnious men capable of adopting. The people, however, langh them to scorn and treat their machinations with that contempt and ind fference which they so deservedly merit.

In this connection the St. Lonis Post Dispatch relates the following : Under the title of ‘* Old Probabilities ” one of the veeful and valuable officers of the United States is most widely known. But quite as well 4nown is Prof. J. H. Tice, the meteorologist,of the Mississippi Valley, whese contributions to his favorite study have given him an almost national reputa- iiom. On a recent lecture tour through the Northwest, the Professor had a narrow escape from the serious consequences of a sudden and very dangerous illness, the pariiculars of whith he thus refers to: ‘The day after concluding my conree of ectures at Burlington, Lowa, on the 21st of Dec. last, was seized with a sudden attack of neuralgia in the chest, giving me ex- crucisting pain and almost preventing breathing. My palse, usually 80, fell to 85; intense nausea of the stomach suc- ceeded and a cold, clammy sweat covered wy entire body. The attending physician conld do nothing to relieve me. After suffering for three hours I thought-—as I had been using St. Jacobs Oil with goed effect for rheumatic pains—I would try it. | saturated a piece of flannel large enough to cover my chest, with the Oil, and ap- plied it. The relief was almost instantan- eous. In one hour I was entirely free from pain, and would have taken the train to fill an appointment in a neighboring town had my friends not dissuaded me. As it was, | took the night train for my home, in St. Louis, and have not been troubled since.”
