Brat. ‘f Quango,” Clark, at New York 20th, from Ponce, Feb. 7, via Turks Island, reports April 4 and 5 had heavy gale, with cross seas, which filled decks with water, and the vessels laboring heavily.
We regret to learn that the dwelling- house at Wood Islands, owned by Hon. W. W. Lord and occupied by Mr. W ellington Beers, was consumed by fire on Wednesday
evening last. Nearly all Mr. Beer's furni- ture was destroyed, The house was partly
insured.
We learn from a correspondent that Souris is ‘‘ spoiling’ for a singing match. They have a man in training there who is willing to sing or whistle in a match against any man in the Dominion. 3ut he prefers tackling the champion of the Moncton- Summerside contest—thet is, if that thing can ever be settled.
Launcuep.—On the 27th inst., from the shipyard of Messrs. Coffin & Glover, Mount Stewart, a handsome and well finished brig of 296 tons register, copper fastened, to class 7 years A in English Lloyds, named the ‘Elia B.” This vessel was built for Peake Bros. & Co., and towed down to Charlotte- town by the steamer ‘‘ Heather Belle.”
Tur St. John News says: ‘* The great rush into the North-West anticipated . has not yet taken place, but it appears that the
ulation of Manitoba is increasing at the rate of one thousand a week. That is ahigh- ly respectable rate of increase, but small in comparison with the rate at which settle- ment in the North-West is destined to go on so soon as easy railway communication therewith shall have been established.
Tus Pioneer says: ‘*The vessels reported in the ice off Nail Pond last week were still there at latest accounts. Eight of them worked their way round the North Cape on Monday with the west wind, while ten are reported to be still locked up in the ice. Seme of them appear to be completely thrown out of the wateron the ice,asthey seem to be listed on their beam ends. ‘There is much heavy ice around Tignish and the west shore yet.”
‘Tue THunperer.”—This vessel, which the despatches state is to be sent to British Columbia, is one of ‘the most powerful of the new British ironclads. She is an armored turret ship of 9,387 tons, having plates varying from ten to fourteen inches in thickness on her turrets and sides, and three inches of iron on her decks. She earries two 12-inch 38 ton guns in the one turret and two 12-inch 35 ton guns in the other. She has a compliment ef 340 men. The Thunderer way be relied on to thrash the whole Russian fleet, including the much talked of Peter the Great.
THE supper at the St. Lawrence Hotel, given by the City Lodges of I. O. O. I. to their visiting brethren, was in every respect most enjoyable. The tables contained all that heart could wish for, and full justice was given the spread. Tho usual standard and volunteer toasts were proposed and re- sponded to ‘‘ without the.aid of wine.” Brief speeches were made by brothers W. W. Stumbles; W. C. DesBrisay, Vernon H. Knight, Theo. L. Chappelle, H. J. Massey and E. D. Stair. The festivities were enlivened with songs, well rendered, by brothers Caldwell, Muncey and Prof. Earle. At 1a, m. ‘‘ Our next Merry Meet- ing” was drvnk, and the members from Summerside were accompanied to the Rail- away Depot by their friends, At 1.30 the train left with the visitors, who will, no doubt, long remember the 26th day of April, 1878.
Avan early hour this morning the ser- vant boy of Captain Lund discovered three tubs of butter sitting close to the jail fence on Richmond Street. He informed his master of the matter, and the City Marshal was summoned to inspect whai was evident- ly stolen property. On his arrival, the butter was securely locked in Mr. Lund’s
remaises, and its owner sought for. The arshal visited several butter dealers, and latterly Mr. F. T. Newbery, who had a large quantity of butter stored in a ware- house on Peake’s No. 2 Wharf. On exam- ination, it was discovered that out of seven- teen tubs of butter that were in the ware- house.on the previous nightsonly fourteen remained; ‘There were no traces of the burglars on the premises; but it is evident that they had a duplicate key of the pad- lock of the warehouse door. The butter was retuned to Mr.’ ‘Newbery, There is, as yet, no clue to the robbers.

The Duke of Cambridge, Commander-in- chief, has issued ageneral order conveying to the army an expression of the Queen’s approbation of the patriotie and soltier- hike’ ‘spirit displayed by the reserves by the very satisfactory manner in which they responded to the call for mobilization. There are only twenty-five absentees from the army reserve who belong to the metro- polis, and of these some are invalids.

Ex-Solicitor Baker publishes a letter to- day in reply to Goff’sin yesterday’s Herald. He repeats his gensralid snials, but admits he purelinsed a sleigh and robe from Goff, for which he paid in a draft ‘on the Union Bank. Goff’s charge is:that he gave Baker the sleigh as part payment for his services on. behalf of the subsidy.
The nominations for all three divisions of the city for the Local House took place to- day. ‘There is very little interest taken in the elections in Montreal.
