U be Tuesday night, last week. the dwelling house of wheel Blitser. a blacksmith living at Sudield (‘enter was burned to the ground, and in it five children. The calamity is one of heartorending de- tail,.and has thrown the parents into the most dos- peiring let, as well as filled the communit with profcun sorrow. The following are the particulars that have reached us: The dwelling occupied by Mr. Blitser was a rather small two-story house. The lower apartments we occupied as a sitting room. kitchen, and pantry, the upper rooms being occupied by the family for bedrooms. The family of Mr. Blitaer consisted of himsoli. wife, six children, end an apprentice. The eldest of the children was a girl about twelve years old. the youngest an infant ot a few months. A little boy two cars old was at Mr. Blitser's parents, the other chil ren being at home on the fatal night. Mr. end Mrs. Blitzer, with the babe, occupied one room, the four children end the apprentice sleeping in another. About eleven o’clock Mrs Blitur arose, lit a candle. end descended to the

ntry for some milk for the babe. which she gave it, and then replaced it in the cradle it occupied by the bedside. Later in the night, about twelve o’cloolt. as is supposed, the apprentice wee awaken- ed by the eldest child. who aroused him by shaking him. The girl did not speak, as the room was then Iliad with smoke to the point of sullocetien. end the apprentice iound himself so nearly suffocated that he could not speak. He rushed at once to the room oi Mr. Blitzer, and aroused him by shaking him. Hr. llitser, awakened his wife, and rushed down stairs. followed by her, neither, for the moment, thinking at the babe. Throwing open an outside door, a draft was created. end the whole promises sprang into a bless. The apprentice returned to the other cham- ber, but the smoke and heat had so increased. that he at once sought to descend, but found it impossible and jumped from the window of the room to the ground. After getting outside Mr. Blitser made as- veral frantic attem ts to rc-enter the house to rescue his children. but oiled in the edert. The house noon fell, burying in the ruins the remains of the five children. It is supposed that the children were suffocated to death with the smoke before the flames could reach them. The girl who awakened the ap- prentlce. it is thought. sank down upon the door, dying at that bedside at once, as her remains were iouud in a position indicating such a fact. ' theory, end the one generally accepted is, that Mrs. Blitser in going into the pantry with the candle. un- cousciouely not something onfllre—papers upon the shelves. perhaps-from which the conflagratien en- sued. The charred remains of the five victims were buried in one grave, on Thusdey, the solemn cere- monies being attended by a large concourse, and the greatest sympathy manifested for the crushed end distracted parents. Everything belonging to the family was. of course. dentroyetl, including every article of clothing possessed by them. and 850 in money which was on a garment upon Mr. B. Upon the house and its contents there was an insurance covering quite a smell portion of its veins. We have still three months. or Napoleon must give the signal, and the exhibition does not close till August.but if he Iives,aud ‘unforseen events do not arrive.’ Germany will yet be welded into a harder unity by blows from the outside. For some days past. one of the ablest of our judges hasbeen engn d in trying a series of criminal cases which althoug not singular in their details, can hardly. foil. to startle the public when it is known that nine in every ten of the criminals have been young men. in many instnneos mere boys Nothing is to be gained by blinding ourselves to the real state of the case, and the solemn truth is before us that our penitenteriee and State prisons are rapidly being filled with young men under the age of twenty-

Only yesterday,Judge Daniele passed sentence on three young man of nineteen, one of twenty, and one of twenty-three years of age. the terms of im- prisonment, in these five instances, aggregating nearly eleven years. During the meruing, a young men ‘was convicted of a deadly assault upon a friend and .in the afternoon a boy belonging to one of our public schools. told a story which will have a terrible import to those parents who reflect that the same ayennes to crime are open to their sons, and the same villtane lie in wait for them. There is something radically wrong in the condition of society, when such things as these are of daily occurrence. We uterer state the facts. Our readers must make the application. Upon which a New York paper remarks :

We remember of neighbourhood sehools in this St_ato, in our very tender years. Forty, and even thirty years ego,whet were called ‘ District Schools.’ supported by the parents using them. were not gener- ally ‘ Godlens' Schools. Each of them was subject to the religious teachings believed in by the parents that supported it. In one, one catechism of religion was taught. In another. another one. The hardy boys and girl. of that day would travel miles to attend the so be! approved by their parents.
