The Student Union has been given a grant to study the effects of alcohol on campus. The 1992/93 yearbook will be dedicated to Michael Scott Miller, the young man who was killed in a car accident on University Avenue in front of campus last year.

We had tried to organize a discussion panel with the candidates for the Liberal leader- ship race, but C. Callbeck was not available. We did, however, make our concerns known to all three.

Blue Rodeo was a success, being sold out both nights. Sue Medley is coming on Feb.18.

Student Union election dates were pro- —

posed and accepted by council. Watch the X- Press for these dates. The General Meeting, held in the PIT will be on March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, so the entire executive will be wearing green as they make speeches. Candi- dates for the elections will be making their speeches at this time.

We passed a motion to allow our Gen- eral Manager to get quotes for a business plan for our future Student Centre.

Safe-Walk steering committee will be up and running ASAP.

Council dates for the rest of the semes- ter are : Feb.7th, Feb.28th, March 14th, March 28th, and April isn’t decided yet.

A rally is being planned for the 11th of Feb. We hope to get a lot of students out to protest cuts in funding and student aid. Every on is welcome. ‘

SO YOU WANT TO BE A STUDENT UN- ION EXEC...

Hi, my name is Michelle MacCallum and I’m the Student Union President. I would like to take this time to give a rundown on executive life for anyone who is thinking of running for President or any of the other four executive positions. Some of it is positive and some of it is negative so here goes:

As President I have effectively given up my personal life. A night out with my friends has become arare commodity and my boyfriend and I see very little of each other. I think about Student Union most of the time, even during ...

has become a distant, alien thing that I do in great bursts of energy, usually between 1:00 and 3:00 am.

The pay isn’t great either. I get paid for

10 hours a week, but put in approximately 30 to 40 hours a week. This is actually a volunteer position with an honorarium. No onecan do this joband have another one and take three courses. So that is something to think about.

This is not all negative, though. As President I’ve made some very useful contacts both for myself and for the student body. I’ve learned how to lobby and how to negotiate with administration and government officials. My public speaking skills have become better and my knees don’t shake when I have to get up and give a speech. I am on a first name basis with most of the media and have learned how to write Press releases and how to stay in control of an interview. These are skills that I’m sure will help me in the future when I’m a famous writer. Every once in a while I get a great feeling of accomplishment and joy that I’ve done some- thing important. This position requires some- one who can laugh at themselves and not take anything too personally. If you can do that, the position can be a lot of fun. You must always remember that youare here to serve the students of UPEI, but at the end, it is the personal satisfaction that is your reward. It feels good to have left amark, however small, on the Univer- sity community.

The reason I did this was not to scare away potential candidates, but to add to the job descriptions given in the Executive committee by-laws which are published in the X-Press. If you are committed to student affairs, have the time and the drive, these executive positions are for you. If anyone has any questions feel free to drop by and see me in my big corner office at the Student Union.
