What are little girls i made of'?' Dependence, non-aggression, pas- sivity, sensitivity, em- pathy, subjectivity, nurturance, intuitive» ness, emotional liability, and receptivity.

These terms describe the stereotyped, idealized qualities of "maleness" and "femaleness", but they also describe real qualities of real men and women. Some individuals may resemble the stereo— type of the opposite

sex more closely than that of their own, yet group differences be— tween the sexes tend to bear out these stereo- typed portraits. How‘ does this occur? How do little boys and girls .become socialized? And why, as a result, do men and women closely conform to society's ideal norms?

This non—credit inter— disciplinary course will examine these questions as well as some of the forces in North American culture that have influenced the strong, existent sexual stereotypes, forces such as the Bible and mythology, literature, music, art, and the film.
