| Mr. D. Taylor next addressed the meet- ing. He spoke at considerable length on the actions of the Davies and Sullivan Governments,
Duncan Munn, Esq., of Little Sands, He said he did not attend the meeting for the purpose of speaking; but would not like to refuse, and instantly sprang to his feet, and in his usual humorous style gave the present Government a severe castigation for several actions, and particularly the repeal of the Assessinent Act, and starving the public works; and- springing the election on the people at such an unpropitious season of the year, necessitating loss of time to the farmers, who are the bulk of the people of this Proviace. He could not approve of ‘the Government's actions, and considered the School Act worse than ever.
Angus D. McMillan addressed the meet- ing. He asked the late members what amount was available for revenue purposes jin 1879, and also at the present time, |which the members could not do satisfac- jtorily ; he found fault with the manner in which the present Government acted towards our public works in this district ; ‘also for the manner in which the election iwas forced upon the people at this busy ‘season ; said he would oppose the present
‘Government to the utmost of his power.
Mr. William McKenzie spoke with con- jsiderable ability; said he would contra- ‘dict Mr. Crawford’s statements in saying ‘that the present Government kept the ex- |penditure within the revenue, as they had ‘exceeded the revenueto a very great extent. | Mr. Dancan Taylor then submitted the ‘following resolution, seconded y Mr. | William McKenzie, Selkirk Road:

The English Budget
Mf. Gladstone, in the House of Commons on the 24th ult., introduced the budget, and said the actual! surplus of the revenve over the expenditures for the past year was £352,000. The condition of trade could not be considered unsatisfactory. He call- ed attention to certain permanent ineroase of expenditure, such as increase of £450,- 000 required for Irish riots, including these for, police, resident magistrates and Land Court, and jucyease of £107,000 for charges on account of postal telgraphs, and another of £35,000 for red’ ction of debt. Mr. Gladstone regretted the growing popu- lar indifference in England to the increase of expenditure. Tas lttoricans had shown extraordinary vigor and fortitude in redue- ing their debt and in bearing a heavy taxation for that purpose. He thought our modern history hardly creditable. The revenue for the coming year was estimated at £84,935,000, showing an estimated sur. plus of £305,000. Mr. Gladatone said the meagreness of this surplus was such that he had to abandon hope of a great financial re-adjustment. In connection with the County Government Bill and in order to fulfil promises in vegard to the re-adjust- ment of the highway rate, he proposed to raise £250,000 more by a slight increase of carriage duty. This was the only novelty in the budget. He stated the national debt had been reduced by £7,169,000 dur- ing the year. Gladstone concluded by as- suring the House and the country he had concealed nothing. Sir Stafford Northcote said he would defer criticism on the budget speech of the right hon. gentleman.

Among others referred to in a recent issue of the Norristown (Pa.) Herald, were the following cases of special interest. They are their own commentary. Mr. Samuel ©. Nyce, resides at 308 Marshall St., and helds the responsible position of journal clerk in the Pennsylvania Legis- lature, at Harrisburg. While Mr. Nyce and family were in the country recently, his boy, aged three years, fell and broke limb. He recovered, but. a very troublesome stiffness set in and he could scarcely use the leg. The injured limb was rubbed several times with St. Jacobs Oil, and the stiffness was so much reduced that the boy was able to use his leg freely. Dr. Knipe said it was the use of St. Jacobs

A very unpleasant account is given by « Brazilian paper of the proceedings of a huge water snake called the ‘‘sncuruya”’ which is to be found in some of the rivers of Brazil. An accident occurred the other day on the banks of the Rio Araesuahy, owing to the voracity of one of these reptiles. A slave, with sume companions, was fishing with a net in the river, when he was suddenly seized by a eucuruyu, and in spite of his resistence was dragged under the water in the presence of the horrified spectators. He never appeared again, and no doubt is entertained that he was swallowed by the sucuruyu, who made an effort with his hinder coils to carry off at the same time another of the fishing party. It is the ex- ception for the sucuruyu to attack human beings; but it loses no opportunity of seiz- ing deer, calves, and other quadrupeds when they come to drink.
