A Mareimontat Escarpape.—Some time ago the heads of two families living in a flourishing settlement not many miles from Charlottetown, held a consultation at which it was decided that the daughter of one of the parties should wed the son of the other. It was also decided that the marriage cere- mony be performed at an early date. The result of the conference was communicated to the young pair. The man took kiadly

to the business, the girldidnot. But her parents insisted upon her carrying out the bargain they had made. Now,

the girl had a young man in Boston to whom she was very much attached, and to him she wrote, telling of her trouble. The young man promised to help her out—which pro- mise he faithfully kept. (ne morning last week the girl came to town, promising to return the same evening. This she did not do, sending word home that she would re- main in the city over night to consult an oculist. The ,next night her lover arrived from Boston, and the following morning the twain left; on return to Uncle Sam's domains. Their wedding has pre- bably taken place before this. We have

The Great Strike. Lonxpon, Aug. 29,

At 4p. m. the strike was still at a dead- lock. The! whartingers have submitted to the dock companies, and the strikers’ pian for the settlement of the questions at issue included the proposal to make the American clauses in the bills of Jading in- operative as far as they are concerned. The wharfingers and granary keepers re- presentatives of the companies declined to accept this solution of the difficulty, and are preparing a manifest in,which they will declare that they will only pay 5 pence per hour. The telegraph construction and maintenance company’s men at Greenwich have struck. The tailers are joining the strike. The crew of three American cattle ships have joined the strikers. Burns says that the dockmen will tirmly adhere to the position taken, and will not reduce their demand.

Behring Sea Matters. San Francisco, Aug. 27. A letter was received from an officer of the U.S. steamer Richard Rush, by the steamer St. Paul, which arrived from Oun- alaska Tuesday night, stating that, on Aug. 6th the Rush captured the British sealing schooner Lily in Behring Sea, while taking seals in Behring Sea. The schooner was searched, and 300 skins found and _ placed on board the Rush. A prize crew of one man was placed on board, and the Lily sent to Sitka. The seized sealers will have their cases tried in the Alaskan District Court. sainwithayallasil lites The White Caps Again. Orrawa, Aug. 29.

White caps have appeared in Wellington County, Ont., and last night a farmer liv- ing near Guelph was dragged from his bed by masked men and a severe thrashing ad- winistered to him. He had been* warned several times lately that something would done by this society, but he did not heed the warnings until four stout men came into the room, taking him out of bed. He presents a terrible appearance, his face being kicked to a jelly and his body all black and blue.

A Daring Abduction. Cuicaco, Aug. 29.

This morning on South Water Street, one of the busiest chroroughfares in the city, while Henry Rosenburg, a peddler in vegetables, was in the market house buying supplies, an unkuown nian appeared, and lifting Rosenburg’s 5-year-old son from the wagon ran rapidly away with him. No

trace of the child has been secured.

A Steamer Seized.

Sr. Joun, N. B., Aug. 29. This evening Special Customs Officer Bonness seized the steamnr City of Monti- cello for smuggling goods which came from Boston via Digby. The vessel was released on a $400 deposit. The Cronin Case. Cuicaco, Aug. 29. Judge McConnell has decided that all de- fendants in the Cronin case will be tried to- gether, except Woodruff, who, in view of his confessions, will be tried separately. Baseball News. Sr. Joun, Aug. 29. The game this afternoon between the Shamrocks and Socials resulted in a most disastrous defeat for the visitors by a score of 19 to 2.
