Numerous claimants have arisen since then to contest the right of Professor Morse to the invention of the electric telegraph; but the whole scientific world now recognizes our dis- tinguished countryman as the first to prove the practicability of transmitting intelligence be- tween distant points through the agency of the electric current. The le islature meet for form's sake. receiving $3, 0 a year for a session of 11 weeks, their duty being to nod assent to what- ever Bona arte proposes. There is the same liberty of isbussion in France. as in Russia.

As to Russia, the blockade of her ports is terribly effective. She is shut out from the rest

of the world; her ex enses are doubled: her ad

income is lessened; t ose of her manufactures which depend u n imported raw materials are standing stil : her agricultural produce, (except when carried by land, ata ruinous cost) , is without a urchaser; the best workmen are wanted for t e army; salt, iron, coal,cofl'ce, sugar, &c., fetch enormous prices; mone is remarkably scarce; 'and the stock of coa for the Russian navy will, it is asserted, scarcely serve through the long winter.

Who will first give in! Who can stand such a purchase longest? Where will the indepen- dence of Turkey be at the close of the struggle l What will be its effects u n human rights and libert 1 We doubt whet or any ofthe parties who direct these gigantic operations care for the millions, except to make tools of them. Nothin in the career of either the Russian or Frenc despots, or of Lord Palmerston, will show the cpntrary.—'I‘orarilo Examiner, August 29.

The Steamer Lady Le Marchantarrived yes- terday morning with the British Mails. She came up the Harbor decorated with ﬂags and firing guns, which put the whole town on the r/ui l.'fl‘t'. The pnblic oflics were closed for the day by order of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor. lugs at once became in demand, and the City were a lively appear- ance, a salute was fired from the Battery and the Mayor issued a proclamation for a general illumination in the evening, which was cordi- ally and generall responded to, bonﬁres and fireworks were ex iibited on the squares which also added to the cnliveniiieiit of the evening, and we are glad to say that all passed offwitliout any serious accident. .
