The Selection of Teachers.

The Board of Education of San Francis- eo recently adopted a plan for the selection of teachers, which has been recognized as an improvement on that which previously prevailed. According to it, the applicants are divided into two classes—-the exper- ienced and the inexperienced. Those whose names are found in thelist of the former class in all cases take precedence ever those of the latter. But this is only the first step in reform, though it is an im- portent one. ‘Lhe pextis the proper classi-,

tion of experienced teachers. In effect- ing this every quality that tends to increase the teacher's efficiency is taken into con- sideration—knowledge, general or special ability, character and teacher power. Whenever a vacancy occurs in any of the higher schools, the preference is to be given to the teacher who has the highest rank and fitness for the duties. When the experienced list is exhausted, and not till then, resort is had to the in- experienced list—the teachers of the latcer class being, however, only eligible for primary schools. ‘The appointment is made at first for only six months, but the Board

‘ YE hereby inform the pub- lic of this city, and the

Island generally, that previous to Stock-taking, we have re- solved to clear out as much of our Winter Stock as possible. We are aware that at this season itis hard to get people to buy even at reduced prices; but in the face of this difficulty we have made up our mind to adopt full measures, and sell our Wool Goods and Dress Goods at a sacrifice.

Our Goods have been very cheap ali winter, as the run of trade we have had fully testifies. Our store has become the resort of those Ladies who know how to make a penny go a loug way, and who know a cheap article when they see it; and when we say we are going to reduce the prices of our Dress Goods and Trimmings, we know we shall be believed. We are particul- arly anxious to clear out our present Stock, in order to intro- duce as much of the newest style of Dress Material as possible, and at the very lowest prices. We shall make special prices on Black Cashmeres, Black Meri- nos, Black Cords and Lustres, Lustrines and Brilliantines.

Our Fancy Wool Goods will be sold at less than cost. Our Stock of this class was the larg-

remunerative places, it must be allowed that there are numerous exceptions. The prizes of the profession are not always ad- judged to those who have devoted them- selves most laboriously and conscientiously to the cause of education. In all there Fespects the working of the new system will be beneficial. The standard of fitness will be raised, only really able and energetic teachers will occupy the more responsible ns and the whole class will be freed tom the incubus of mere place hunters, Whose persistent self-seeking often stands

in the way of the modest and deserving. — |

The theatre royal has been completely destroyed b:r fire. Several adjoining houses were threatened with destruction. The police inspe:tor and ene workman were in= injured, ‘There waa to have been a per- formance of pantomimes in the theatre this afiernoon, 24 which the Duke and Duchess of Marlborengh were to be present. The fire was oceisioned by the igniting of eur- tains in their State box.
