THE WELCOME MEETING.

Amuerst, N. 8., July 27.

The Welcome Meeting last night in the Baptist Church was crowded. Vice-Presi- dent McKeen, of Amherst, presided and opened with an address. President Me- Callum responded, and Rev. Mr. Stxeet, welcomed the delegates on behalf of the clergy. Rev. Mr. Bruce, of St. John, re- sponded. Hon. Hiram Black spoke for the citizens, and Mr. Kelley, of Montreal re- sponded. The addresses were all good, and the meeting most enth asiastic,

This morning the Convention met at ; 9.30. Rev. Wim. Brown, of Windsor, read an excellent paper on the Word of God, its place and its authority in our works. A lively and iuteresting discussion followed.

Reports from various associations were handed in. Mr. Distton, of St. John, re- | ported a fairly successful year and en- couraging prospects. Membership 415.

This afternoon, Rev. and Hon. Mvreton, of Halifax, gave a very interesting Bible reading.

Mr. McIntosh afterwards read the report

of the Executive Committee. There are 36 Associations in the Maritime Provinces. Receipts, $101,171; expenditure, $124,993; balance due treasurer, $23,822. Che week of prayer will be held follow- ing the Sunday in November. Secretary McLeod has given notice of his resignation.

Contrary to expectation, the Grit Con- vention at Truro to-day nominated a straight party candidate to contest Colchester Co. Their choice was Cyrus Eaton, hardware merchant, of Truro. Mr. Eaton's platform is Unrestricted Reciprocity and Prohibi tion. There are now three temperance candidates in the field. First, Sir Adams Archibald, Ministerialist, a life-long tem- perance man, formerly a prominent Son of Temperance, and who voted fur prohihition in the Nova Scotia Legislature thirty-three years ago; second, Cyrus Eaton, Opposition, President of Truro Jubilee Temperance Society and a decided Prohibitionist; and

third, Edward Fulton, the third party Prohibitionist, Possibly Fulton will with- draw.

It is rumored that Lord and Lady Dufferin have announced their intention of making their return journey to England from India via Vancouver and the Canadian route.

Mr. Blake sailed for Canada, to-day.

Militia in the Northwest.

. Orrawa, July 27.

It is reported that the Government will ultim«tely transform the Northwest Mount- ed Police into a militia corps under the direction of the Militia Department. It is believed here that if the question is taken up and it is decided to have militia in the Northwest, that levies made will consist for the most part of cavalry, the opinion being entertamed that the formation of troops at various points would be a very easy matter.

Knights of Labor.

Linpsay, Ont., July 27.

The Convention of Local Assemblies of Knights of Labor in session here has passed resuiutions condemning undesirable im- migration and calling the attention of mem- bers of Parliament to the vast importance of the Government issuing all currency and establishing a National Bank, all benetits derived therefrom to go direct tothe people.

Cuicaco, July 27. An unsucccessful attempt was made shortly after 3.4. m. to blow up_ the house of Christian Kreuger, 675 Lincoln Avenue, with dynamite bombs. No cause is known.

Rome, July 27. The Pope is suffering from liver com- plaint, and is losing strength. He has been ordered to take mineral waters before breakfast.
