AN attempt was made, on Saturday, to cell liquor at the tea party at Hunter Kiver, but Rev. Mr. Collings was equal to the occasion, and nipped tke business in the bud. When the liquor arrived at Hunter Kiver Station, he enquired for its owner, but was nuable to tind him. Thinking it to be dangerous, just then, he promptly confiscated the greater portion of it, and sent the balance to the shippers in Charlottetown.

Ovg readers will not be surprised to learn that the statement which recently appeared in the Toronto Globe, and was eagerly copied by every Grit journal in the Dominion, to the effect that Dr. Orton, M. P., had been ejected from his Hotel in Toronto for being drank, and had spent the night ia the Police Station, isa lie, pure and simple, Dr. Orton writes to the press indignantly denying the charge, and giving it a flat contradiction. Will the Patriot and Journal make the amende honorable.

Tue Supreme Court was engaged this morn- ing trying the man Parsons for placing obstructions on the Prince Edward Island Railway ir January last. The prisoner had no counsel, and the Court instructed the Sheriff to procure one from any of the young lawyers who usually throng the Court-room,; but that dignitary returned the order ‘* non est inventis ;” consequently, the prisoner had to plead his own case. The evidence for the

rosecution being concluded, the prisoner was asked for his defence. He had none, and the jury, after a very short absence, found hit vailty. Parsons does not appear to be “ all there ’—in fact, he is a ‘‘crank.” The trial of civil cases commenced this evening.

It was played by the present Company 12 Halifax a few weeks since, making a pronounced hit, and has been presented by them to crowded and delighted audiences in several cities on their route, It will be given this evening in its entirety, and should be witnessed {by all who are lovers of good acting and fine effects. The express train, lesving Long Branch at 8.06 this morning, was thrown from the track while crossing’ a bridge near Little Silver station ; caused probably by spread- ing of the rails. Four passenger cars and a smoker went into the water with a ter- rible crash. One passenger was taken out dead ; another has since died, while nearly 100 are more or less hurt. John J. Ray mond had his collar bone broken and otherwise injured ; Prest. Gallaway, of the Elevated R. R., slightly injured ; Wm. R. Garrison, son of Commodore Garrison, is suffering from concussion of the brain ; Geo. R. Blanchard, Vice-Prest. of the N. ¥., L. E. & W. Ry. Cot, Robt. M- Min- turn, ex-President. Grant, and Arthar L. Sewell, are among those only slightly cut and injared.

The regatta opened here yesterday. The weather was beautiful and large crowds were present, The water was considerably ruffled by a fresh breeze which sprang up shortly before the start. The first event was the exhibition race between Wallace Ross and Kennedy. Neither exerted him- self to any great extent and they kept well together till near the finish, when Ross drew ahead and crossed the line a few sec- onds abcad of his opponent. They get between them a purse of $1000. They leave for Boston to-day. The second event was for single inrigged skiffs, two miles with turn, for a cup worth $100 to first ; cup worth $40 to second. There were four entries. Three local men were in the con- test. Wall took the lead and won easily in 18 minutes. Foray was less than a minute behind, and three lengths ahead of Fisher.
