A Dreadful Worm.

Who has not heard of the rattlesnake or copperhead? An unexpected sight a either of these reptiles will mako even , the lords of creation recoil. But there is 2 species of worm found in various om this land, which conveys & poison 0° . nature so deadly that when compared wit h it the'ronom of the rattlesnakes is harmless. To guard our readers against this foe of human kind is the object of the present communication. This worm vat ae much in size. It 1s frequently an imeceh through ; but as it is rarely seen except whew coiled, its length can hardly be con- jecture:l. It is of a dull load celor, and generally lives near & spring, OF a small stream of water, and bites the unfortunate people who are in the habit of going there to drink. The brute creation it never molests. They avoid it with the same in- stinct that teaches the animals of Peru to shun the deadly Cova when it way-lays their pathway. The symptoms of its bite is ter- rible. The eyes of the patient become red and fiery, his tongue is swollen te an im- moderate size, and obstructs his utterance, and delirium of the most horrid character quickly follows. Sometimes, in his mad- ness, he attempts the destruction of his dearest friends. Ifa sufforer.has a family his weeping wife and helpless infants are net unfrequently the object of his frantic fury. Such is the spell in which hia senses are bound, that no sooner is he recovered from the paroxyism of insanity oecasioned by one bite, than he seeks out his destroy- er to be bitten again. Ihave seen a good ald father, his locks white as snow, his step slow and trembling, beg in vain of his only son to quit the lurking place of the worm, My heart bled when he turned away, for | knew the hope so fondly cher- ished, that his son would be to him the staff and support of his declining years, had supported him through many sorrows. Youths of America, would you know the the name of this reptile? It is the worm of the still.—John Russell.

A London paper. says that ‘‘ a few days since a young lady who is the belle of a certain suburb net a hundred miles from Charing Cross, and is renowned not enly for her charming figure and exquisite taste in dress but also for her grace and skill as a skster, was fascinating a host of ad- mairers and maddening with jealousy a host of rivals by her feats upon the ice, when she suddenly stumbled and fell. A score of chivalrous gallants sped to the rescue, but hefore one of them conld reach her she had regained her fest. She was wearing a Canadian skating costums. It unfertunate- ly happened in this case that in endeaver- ing to save herself, the lady ripped her stocking with the point of her skate. She was not, however, aware of the mishap, and glided away from her rescuers with her usual rapidity. As she sped along in conscious triumph a strange sound reached her ears, ominously like suppressed laugh- ter. She cast a quick glance back, and I leave you to imagine her feelings when she saw that her course was marked by a long trail of sawdust. The stately limb to which the wounded stocking belonged was fast losing its symmetry, and the secret of its shapeliness stoed revealed. Enough ; | will draw a veil over her blushes. But I doubt whether she will skate much in pub- lic near London this winter.”

The German naval authorities have al- tered the meaning of ‘‘ port” and “‘ star- board” to directly opposite what these words mean in the English marine. The result will be a fine crop of accidents, for which, of course,“‘no one’ will be to blame.
