A meeting was held in Dublin on the 16th in support of the Parnell testimonial. Thomas Sexton, member of Parliament for Sligo county, was one of the speakers. He violently attacked the Government, which he declared was the worst that ever ruled over Ireland. That the Papal circular applied only to the cleryy and not to the latte atail. He thought it might be desir- able to send a deputation to Rome to ex- plain to the Pope the true condition of affairs in Ireland; that the Irish people were sorry to lose the valuable services of the clergy, but that with or without allies the movement must go on.

Tue celebrated Cohan, Sellon & Burns company, will play at the Academy of Music 25th and 26th inst. We clip the following fror: the Halifax Herald of May 15. A large audience were present at the Lyceum last evening, to witness the initial performance of the Cohan, Sellon & Burns compeny. The usual first part was given, introducing sole and chorus singing, J'g dancing, ete., all of which were well render- ed and received generous applause. The irrepressible Jerry Cohan was the favorite, and from his unlimited fand of humor managed to keep the audience on a broad smile throughout the evening. The pano- rama of Ireland contains some fine scenes, and the introductory remarks and explana- tions were very distinctively made. The specia'ties were cleverly executed, particu- larly noticeable being a skipping-rope Jig by Miss Bursell, and the different styles of clog dancing of Messrs. Burns and Sellon. Miss Alice Gleason sang some pleasing ballads in good style, her voice being a remarkably good one. The entertainment concluded with an amusing operetta, ‘*Irish Frolies,” which had the effect of sending every one home well pleased with the

Tue herring catch off New London, this season, has been an exceptionally geod one. Only last week, Mr. M. P. Dasgan,. one of the enterprising fishermen of that vicinity, caught over sixteen barreis of iarge herring just off the shore. Reports from other tishing stations on the Island are equally satisfactory.

Tue London Times says the emigration scheme proposed by Canadian capitalists hangs tire because of the objections of Mr, Gladstone to the system of state aid. It says the cabinet will insist on the Canadian Govern- ment becoming responsible for the money loaned to furth-r the scheme, probably thivk- ing that by that means they will cause the preject to be abandoncd, There is reason to beheve, however, that Canada will accept the responsibility.
