Since the happy settlement of the bor- der between Burma and China, a step of very great importance has been taken by the telegraph and military departments of the Government of India. Thirty-four miles above Bhamo, on the direct road to the frontier of China, the Ta Ping river falle into the Irawadi. Atthe juac- tion is the military post of Nampaung, not yet to be found in any published wap. Our international] line of telegraph, des- tined to reach Canton and Shanghai if the Japanese do not create such contusion as to stop it for a time, is proceeding through Nampaung to Momein, and is to cross thence into China, going on by way of Tali-fu and Yun-nan, not far from the border of French Anam. The new postis to be held by a larger military force than hitherto since 1891, when it was first formed, because it commands the princip- al trade routes between the northern sea- ports of Burma and China. It was by this route that Dr. Anderson, of Edinburgh, head of the Caicutta museum, led hs scientific expedition when Upper Burmah was still under tts own king, and “the Kuchins of the border hills murdered Mr. Margaray.. Loxpox, Dec. 3.—The Morning Post, in a leading article, asserts positively that the Marquis of Lorne, husband of the Princess Louise, the third daughter of Queen Victoria, has become a partner in a firtin of lint-® decorators, and is actively sharing iu the designing work.
Orrawa, Dec. 3.—Applications to the fisheries department for licenses to fish for commercial purposes in valuable lakes along the line of V. P. R. north of Lake Superior, have been refused, the depart- ment taking ground that the present avail- able supply of fresh water fish is in excess of the market demand.
Loypoxs, December 3.—The Prince of Wales left St. Petersburg yesterday. He may proceed direct to Berlin, where he will make a two days stay. The prince will likely reach London Friday night. He will proceed to Windsor Saturday and re- port to the queen the position of affairs and on Monday will return to London.

The Marquis of Londonderry’s only daughter; Laly Helen Stewart, relates the following story: “A friend of mine has a wiry-haired fox-terrier, of which he and his family are very fond. She was bought m Newmarket Heath when quite a smal! vuppy, and from havingalways lived in the house hax become very companionab e and trustworthy. About two months ago my friend, who is a farmer, was attending a number of young chickens at his farm. Finding one ot them rather delicate and ailing, he wrapped it in a piece of flannel and placed it for warmth inside the kitch- en lender. Hethen went to his work, leaving the terrier curled up in her basket tretable. On his retura he went straight tu the kitchen, bet fuund the flannel empty in thelender. Having interrogated the maid, who declared no one bad been there, he immediately concluded that the terrier had eaten the pullet, and proceeded to beat her. Poor ‘Ranly, retired, cre-t- fallen, to her basket, and soon after the farmer went to bed. Next morning, as he entered the kitchen, he was surprised to hear a faint chuck quite near him. He searched all round the room, and finally in the dog’ basket, where he found the miss- ing chick, comfortably lying beside the fox terrier. ‘Randy’ had evidently thougiit that when the fire went out the chick wonld be cold, so she had lifted it out of the fender into her own basket, and had lain beside it all night to keep it warm. It is rather ead to think that her sagacity had been misunderstood, and that a beat- ing was the only reward she received for her kindness.”

The Al Raja of Cannanore, whose misrule com- pelled the Indian authorities to take over the administration of the southern portion of the first group, has determined to at- tempt the recovery of his lordship, and Mr. Moberly, the district officer of Wa a- bar. has been directed to visit Minikoi, the principal isiet hetween the two groups. On that reef more than one mail steamer ha- been wrecked. The Laccanives are coral atolls, popularly said to number a hun dred—whence their name—but only 14 of which are habitable. The people are Mahommedans of Hindu descent, and live by growing cocoanut fibre, for the prepar- ation of which as coir the still lagoons of The Maldives are administered from Ceylon. Since the time of the old Arab traveller, Ibu Batuta, and the French adventurer. Pyrard. who was kept a prisoner there fur five years after 1602, we iiave only one British account of the islands, that of Lieut. Christopher, R. N., 60 vears ago.
