With his money he was most lavish, giving away the whole of his pay to the soldiers, and those of his ofieers who were in need. The following tale will serve as a proof of the his men :—

“Skobeleff went to visit a of soldiers b idly wounded, moribunds recognized him. ‘Oh,’ said he. ‘there is our one, our Skobeleff,’ Tieothers heard the name, ‘Hurray, harrah!’ they tried to cry out ; so weak and. wavering were their voices, it re- minded one of death more than life. One of the wounded soldiers who bad to be operated on had both legs and an arm to be amputated. Chloroform was offered. ,Why do you ebject? exe claimed the doctors. ‘I cannot,’ re- plied the man: ‘rather ¢et-me smoke a pipe durivg the operation. J exnnot take chloroform. I tell you Iam a Skobeleveis’—belonging to Skobeleff’s division.’

Kind as he was tohis soldiers, he could be stern enough when necessary. Once a working party in the trenches, assailed by a murderous fire frem the Turks, fei] back and sought shelter in the trenches! Skobeleff exelaimed:

‘You are frightened. . . .Your comrades are working, and you are frightened. Form inrank,’ The obey- ed ‘March back to your work, and that at once, If not God be witness if I do not make you go through your drill before the Turkish trenches. You know me. Itis enough.’ They re- sumed their werk without hesitation.

His daring exposure was not due to recklessness or vanity, but to a desire to set an example and inspire confi- dence. Though, however, he exposed himself, he sought to spare the lives of others!

“Once he went to the front, and turning round, perceived a group ef his officers. ‘“‘Why are you here?” hecried. “Youare not necessary.” “We will not let you die alone,” they said. He understood their stratagem, smiled, and returned to another spot.”’

The most ably conducted and auda- cious of Skobeleff’s campaigns was that in which he captured Geok Tepe and conquered the Akhal Tekkes. To describe it would be to write a military essay, Which would be out of a place here. The following extracts, how- ever, from Skobeleff’s instructions to his officers when withdrawing near Gosk Tepe will be read with interest and profit :—

‘The main principle of Asiatic tac tics is to preserve close formutions. Long thin lines, in which troops easily get out of hand and separated into small groups which cannot obey the wil! of the common leader, prevent the latter from opposing strong fermations, in which the superior dsicipline and mo- bility of our troops tell most to sudden er unexpected hostile attacks. . . , The attecks of the enemy's cavalry is to be met by corresponding changes of front, if necessary, and by volleys at short ranges. I recommend even squares (battallion or other), when circumstances permit. . . Mitrail- leuses are to be exclusively in connec- tion with infantry or dismounted cavelry like the former regimental guns, al! Other guns are to be kept in reserve, s@ that they may be used io masses when required; ard so good results muy be Obtained by a few dozen good guns working under one man’s will.”—Lon- dou Atheneum.
