Aliant Presenting Sponsor for CIS Men’s Soccer Championship

The University of Prince Edward Island is pleased to announce that Aliant has signed on to be the presenting sponsor for the 2005 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Men’s Soccer Championship, scheduled for November 10-13 at UPEI. This is the first year for UPEI to host the Championship games which will be played on the new synthetic turf field.

“We are very proud to serve as the presenting sponsor of the CIS men’s soccer championships at UPEI,” said Bruce Howatt, Director of Regional Services for Aliant. “We are really looking forward to working with the organizers to help PEI host another great national tournament and to continue to build our support of youth soccer in Atlantic Canada.”

Part of Aliant’s involvement will include a cash component that will go to the men’s and women’s soccer programs at UPEI. Young soccer players from the province will also have an opportunity to participate in the CIS Nationals through Aliant’s involvement. Players from area youth teams will participate in the Aliant Walk Out, joining the participating teams for the walk onto the field for all games during the National tournament. Local youth will also participate in the Aliant half time show during each game.

The 2005 CIS Men’s Soccer Championships, presented by Aliant, will feature eight teams from all CIS conferences in Canada including UPEI as the hosting team.

Academic All Canadians Lead the Way for Student Athletes

The University of Prince Edward Island has an excellent showing of Academic All Canadians. The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) recognized 26 outstanding students from UPEI for the 2004-05 academic year.

“This is an important opportunity to acknowledge these students who have worked so hard throughout the school year,” says UPEI Athletic Director Ron Annear. “University athletes at UPEI emphasize the educational and leadership components that striving for athletic excellence provides. These athletes are the role models for their fellow teammates.” Every year, a growing number of CIS student-athletes are recognized as Academic All Canadians, having maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 80 per cent or better over the academic year while playing on one of their university’s varsity teams. Over 2,000 student-athletes across Canada have reached the prestigious status for 2004-05.

This year’s UPEI Academic All Canadians are: Katie Andrews, Ryan Anstey, Jamie Bernard, Emily Bradley, Leslie Bradshaw, Colin Brown, Amy Connolly, Luc Chaisson, Madelon Cheverie, David Dalliday, Jacqueline Ellsworth, Vanessa Foster, Chelsea Kavanagh, Katie Lee, Jessica MacDonald, Stephanie MacKinnon, Elizabeth MacPhail, Kati McCarvill, Michael Mclssac, Maureen O’Connor, Joey Seaman, Ashley Shannik, Matthew Thomson, Irene Trainor, Katherine Walters, Barb Vriends.

The strong academic performance of UPEI athletes is seen across all intercollegiate teams: men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, women’s field hockey, rugby, volleyball and men’s hockey. Athletes also come from all years of study and cover many different disciplines from arts, business to sciences and nursing. As a member of Atlantic University Sport and Canadian Interuniversity Sport, UPEI affords students the opportunity to pursue academic and sport excellence.

Volleyball Women Flounder in Home Opener

The volleyball women lost their second straight in their first home game against the Dalhousie Tigers. The Panthers dominated the opening set quickly, winning 25-20 and requiring only five kills in the first frame but the Tigers then stifled UPEI, and despite coming close in the next three sets, the frustrated Panthers suffered close losses of 22-25, 27-29, and 25-27. Barb Vriends led the Panthers with 13 kills. Dal Tigers’ Stacey Power was awarded Player of the Game. Earlier in the week, the ladies endured another loss in five sets to the

Acadia Axewomen.
