Gloomy Surroundiags a Cause of

| Tuberculosis. Cows like plants, need not only light ut sunshine, says George E. Newell inthe Boston Cultivator. In winter

they are necessari)y deprived of more of fit than in summer. Now the pale sun is by each lengthening day increased in efficac y and should not be withheld from milk cows.

No plan is more ir. sanitary than to keep cows confined ina gloomily sun— less stable, while out side the premises

are flooded in the genial warmth of Sol’s rays. All cow stables should be so con-

tructed as to catch every bit of winter

sunshine possible, the move the better. To this end they should be well lighted with south windows and these windows be kept free of those curtains of filth—cobwebs and dust.

Cows kept in sunless stables are affected about the same way that plants are in sunless rooms. They are sickly and have diminished vitality.

It is in such stables that tuberculosis lurks, and all the legislation in the world will not obviate this disease until dairymen better learn and practice the principles of hygiene. Keep cows out of the gloom and in the sunshine if you would have hea!thy ,vigorous animals capable of yielding a maximum quantity of milk.

It is for this reason that I earnestly advocate tightly inclosed barnyards, acting as wind breaks wherg cows may sun themselves for short periods on warm winter days.

Colored Spots in Cheese.

Under the direction of the dairy commisioner of Canada a careful study and report of an outbreak of colored spots in a Canadian factory were made by Dr. W. T. Connell. ‘The tactory was found to be well located, but not well kept. As is too frequently the case with cheese factories the utensils and vats in daily use were fairly well | enna, but in general the factory had an untidy appearance. In particular 'the drains were very defective and | filthy.
