But he never tailed to waken Farmer Browns boy just as the first oi the Black Shadows began going out ot the window. He never allowed his giant friend to over-sleep. The latter called him his living alarm clock.

Then came the morning when there was no light thump oi a little Squirrel landing on the bed. In iact, there was no little Squirrel. He wasn't in his box. He wasn't to be Iound. Farmer Browtft boy looked under, behind and in every- thing where his pet might be hid- ing. Finally he noticed that the window screen was up just a llltle. it had been raised the day beiore and not pulled quitedown again. it didn't seem possible that Runty could have squeezed out beneath it, but Farmer Brown's boy knew that he had.

"He's gone, and probably I'll never see him again," said Farmer Brown's boy mourniuliy. "I'm sorry, yet I'm sort oi.’ glad, too. Oi course, he belongs in the Green Forest. He won't be as saie there, but I suppose he will be happier. Alter all, he was a prisoner. even though I didn't keep him in a cage. I hope he knows enough to look out tor himseli. Perhaps he re- members being caught by Black Pussy, and that will help. I sure will miss the little rascal. Just at daylight the next morn- ing he was wakened by the famil- iar; light thump on the bed close to his iace. He wasn't quite sure that he was awake and not dreaming. But soit silky iur brushed his iace.
