Ture Hon. Daniel Davies discusses in Tar Examiner of to-day an important subject in which the ioterests of this Province are materially involved, What time the ‘close season” for lobsters should begin and end, and whether at one time in one locality and at another time in another locality, is a question for those who have studied the habits of the lobster at different points. But anyone can see, in the light of the experience of this Island and Nova Scotia, that the indiscriminate slaughter of lobsters of all sizes throughout each summer season must end speedily in the ruin of our lobster fishery. Our farms are the chief sources of our prosperity ; for we have a fertile soil aud good climate. But had our farms been managed on like principles with the lobster factories, they would now be all “run out,” aud this Province would be poor indeed. The lobsters were fished uutil the markets were glutted ; and still they were fished. The consequence is that instead of coutinuous supply of large lobsters and profitable returns from those caught, the supply has suffered a falling off ‘ia both and number, and the profits have been fewer, we fear, than the losses. But if our lobster packers kept out of debt andected like sensible farmers, there cau be no doubt that the lobster fishery would be one of the most permanent and most profitable of our industries. Perhaps the best policy that could now be pursued would be to let one-half the lobster grounds lie unfished for several years, as the farmers allow portions of their farms to remain under pasture,atd then treat the remaiuing hall

iu the same way, while the other was being fished in. Whether or uot the “open season”

should be extended after the 20th inst, for the bevefit of fishermea of the West, where lobsters are now reported more plentiful than they have been during this year, is a question which we have no doubt the Minister of Mariue and Fisheries wiil consider and settle after careful consideraiion and due regard to the private and public interests involved. The fishermen are fully equipped and have much at stake ; and we are not pre- pared to say that, for this year ouly, an exteusion should not be grauted.

A Pleasing Sign of the Times. ae

Many things concurred to render sishop MclIntyre’s Silver Jubilee suc- cessful. But the most pleasing features of the memorable occasion were, in our opinion, the loving, hearty enthusiasm displayed by the Catholics, and the truly Christian spirit evinced by persons of other denominations; the reception was attended by ladies and geatlemen who are known to be strongly opposed to some of the doctrines held by Catholics, but who were glad of an opportunity to pay their tribute of respect toagood man. The banquet given by His Lordship was in like manner atteuded by gentlemen who in their religious opinions differ widely from tneir Episcopal host; and strong VProtestants seemed to take as much interest in the preparations which were made for the celebration of the Jubilee as Catholics themselves—some even subscribing handsome sums towards the decorations. The unanimity of re- gard shown for the Bishop who has been in office for a quarter of a centary, is the best evidence in the world that His Lo:dship is worthy of the high position he holds, and that a liberal and manly spirit of toleration is abroad. It is, in- deed, a very pleasiog sign of the times.

| In Memoriam.

Yesterday afternoon there was laid to jreat in St. Peter's Churchyard, Mary, the i beloved wife of the Hon. Mr. Justice Peters. Death came to her very quickly. | She had suffered from heart disease for some time, but no immediate danger was apprehended. On Tvesday, when sitting in her drawing-room she sudden'y became ill, and in a few minutes expired.

Judge Peters and all his family, with the exception of their youngest daughter, were absent from town, and the sad news was quickly despatched to them that a fond wife and a loving mother had entered into her rest.

The ordinary words in which it is cus- tomary to speak of the departed, fail to express the great loss which the whole comnunity has sustained by the death of Mrs. Peters. Possessed of ample means, her charity and generosity were simply unbounded. On Tuesday last many a family beyond the grief-stricken one over which she presided lost a friend indced, Wherever there was sickness or sorrow or want, there she was to be found consoling and comforting. Many a poor invalid has beon the recipient of her generosity. Many a house will miss her _ kind presence and her unfailing goodness. Much as_ she would dislike -her good deeds known, it is not possible to refrain from speaking of them. They were, in fact, universal. If one characteristic exceeded her generosity, it was her unfailing kindness and cheerful- ness and she possessed a wonderful power of imparting somewhat of her bright spirit to those who often, God knows, needed it very much. Ter funeral was largely at- tended by all classes of the community. The body was taken to St. Peter’s Church where the funeral service was sung. To the bereaved members of her family we tender our heart-felt sympathy.

The Pall Mali Gazette Revelations.

Tho following judgment was given on the 29th ult , by thg committee appointed to investigate the revelations published by the Pull Mall Gazette entitled the ‘Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon” :—

‘*We have been requested to investigate the truth of the statements contained in the Pali Mall Gazette of 6, 7, 8, and 10 July, i885, under the title, ‘The Report of our Seeret Commission,”

‘In doing so we decided from the first to exclude any inquiry iuto charges against any particular class or classes of men or into the? conduct of police officers,

‘“‘We have strietly confined ourselves to inquiry into the syatem of criminal vice de- scribed in that Report.

** After carefully sifting the evidence of witeesses and the materials before us, and without guarautecing the accuracy of every particular, we are satisfied that, taken as a whole, the statements in the Pall Mal/ Gaette on this question are substantially true.”

Tue Lavest Swinpite.—The St. John Globe says: On Saturday night a respect- able looking man, dressed in homespun, entergd a dry goods store and drawing a $10 bank note from an envelope asked for two fives. This request was complied with. Passing the bills through his fingers he said he would like to get one of thinner or softer paper, ashe desired to mail it to Nova Scotia. Turning to the till the cashier drew out another note and was passing it over when he noticed that the

stranger had only $5 in_ hia — hand. [The other no doubt, he had slipped into his pocket. The

cashier felt convinced that the stranger had not returned him the other bill, yet the man looked so reapsctable that he did not like to doubt his bonesty, and therefore he handed him over the third $5, upon which the stranger thanked him and withdrew. luvestigation showed that the man had visited several stores while business was brisk, got the cashiers confused while mak- ing change in the manner described, and thus secured $15 in each place for a $10

bill. The scheme is simple, but worked well. roe gg | liked to challenge the men, as he had all the appearance of a solid,

honest citizen. As he may try to work the same game in other places, it would be well to pass him around. .

Sir Charles Dilke has engaged Charles

tussell as counsel and Mr. Searlo as junior counsel. His solicitors have demanded the plaintiff to tile details of his case. The plaintiff's case has been strengthenel by evidence of the physician who was called to Sir Charles Dilke’s house when Mrs. Craw- ford seemed to be sinking under prolonged hysteria, arising from an altercation with the Frenchwoman there. The council of the Liberal Association is divided as to whether to ask Sir Charles Dilke to retiro from public life until after the trial of the divorce case.

Mr. Gisborne, Superintendent of Govern- ment Telegraph, has invented an iron tele- graph pole, which it is claimed will be of great service in the prairie sectiona of the Northwest, where it is very difficult to ob- tain suitable poles. It is understood that the new poles will shortly be tried on a short section in the Northwest, end if found suitable will be generally introduced.
