We always doubted these pro- testations of aiuccrity; but It was rather it dilllculi matter to prove the Confodciatcs hypocrites. Of course their actions were often inconsistent with their words. and by their actions we arrived at the cou- clusters that if the Confederates Imposed the power. or if the chance presented itself to them to betray or legislate the Island into Confederation in opposition to the wishue of the people. they would not hesitate to do so. 'I‘ho history of the Quebec Convention. the secrecy observed about the Quebec Scheme. the fate of Nova Scollu. the hurried calling in of troops. and. last of all. the history of the $800,000 bubble proves to us that the \Vlo’llei and interests of the people would have proved a slight obstacle to the consummation of Confederation. if force or fraud could be successfully employed. But fortunately at this important criaia in the history of our ad'itira, we have more positive proof of the treacherous wishes of tho Confcdcrutcs. if they possessed the power to carry them into execution; and at a time like the present. when a Confederate faction rue mulling the attempt to raise a religious bowl for their own especial benefit. and are engaged in the impudeut attempt to force a Confederate upon the con- stituency of Charlottetown. we are especially delighted tlist we have the moat convincing proof at hand of the treacherous designs of Confederate plotterr.
