Sik Wa, Youn, in his speech at Halifax, on the 7th inst., paid a high tribute to the educational system of Ontario, which, he said, under Dr. Egerton, had far surpassed New York and New England States and stood at the head of the continent.

THe hearing of appeals from the city assess- ment will be finished this evening. Very few of the appeals have been dismissed. The great- er number of the appellants, we understand, have had the amounts of their assessments reduced to the amount paid by them last year.

A Novet Marriace.—There was an in- teresting time at the Bay Shore, Annapolis County, N. 8., last week, when a charming youth of 55 led to the altar a blushing bride of 13. A correspondent of the Halifax Herald aids: ‘* This will decrease the County grant for one.year, at least.”

A CoyemiTTeg of ladies from the Presby- terian congregation of Snmmerside waited on their pastor—the Rev. Neil McKay—on New Yew Year's Day, and presented him with a splendidly written address and a purse con- taining twenty dollars, as ‘‘a feeble expres- sion of their esteem and good will” to him.

Tue St. John Sun says: ‘‘ Very general re- gret and sympathy are felt and expressed in business circles over the failure of Carvell Brothers, of Charlottetown. Acceptances of the firm went to protest on New Year's Day— the first occurrence of the kind in a business career of nineteen years. In common with leading houses everywhere, the firm’s losses have been very heavy during the past year, but their record has been straightforward throughout.”

THE new High School building, located on the eorner of Brunswick and Sackville Streets, Halifax, opened on the 7th inst. There was a large attendance of friends of edueation. Addresses were delivered by J. J. Bremner, { Chairman of the School Board; Dr. David Allison, Superintendent of Education; Lieut. Governor Archibald ; Chief Justice Sir Wm. Young, the Lord Bishop of Nova Scotia, and Rev.’ Br. Hill, Chancellor of the University of Halifax.

LECTURE ON Pore pivs IX—The Very Rev. D. McDonald, D. D., delivered a lengthy and highly instructive lecture on the above subject, in All Saints Church, Cardigan Bridge on Monday night the 6th inst. The Church was crowded to overflowing. The K, C. Advertiser says :—‘*The lecture was a comprehensive review of the numerous tryin vicissitudes through which the late Poatiif passed, from his elevation to the Papal Chair until his death. Many of the stirring scenes and memorable events presented were wit- nessed by the Reverend lecturer during his seven years residence in Rome, and when de- lineated extempore, in his forcible and fascin- ating style, were grand in the extreme. A vote of thanks was tendered the learned Doc- tor at the conclusion, and /suitably acknow- ledged and the large audience dispersed con- gratulating each other upon the rare treat they had received§

Tue attention of the police is hereby direct- ed to a crowd of young gamins from the West End of the city, apparently, who nightly in- fest the Post Office hall and door steps. Last night what might be thought— by some—a se- rious robbery, occurred to an ‘‘ ancient son of the heather,” who was inflamed by the ardent, and who accidentally wandered to that place. About seven o'clock the doorstep was, as usual, thronged with gamins, and our hero came forth and stood on the steps. Suddenly he thought he felt a diminutive object plucking his coat- tail; and placing one hand to his coat pocket, he became overcome by amazement, and in broken accents, loudly exclaimed: ‘‘My heavens, they stole my bottle of whiskey !” He rushed among the crowd of small dusky- Jooking urchins and shouted, ‘‘ Police!” ‘‘Mur- der! at the top of his voice; but the much amused gamins disappeared like so many rats, leaving the old man to lament the loss of a ‘good bottle o’ Old Scotch.”

Montreat, Jan. 8.

The father of a newsboy named Bennett has received intimation that the lad has fallen heir to a fortune worth about £5,000 per annum, consisting of estates in the South of England. ‘This windfall occured through the death of a maiden aunt.

A private dispatch from London reports increased uneasiness in financial circles there. counted at 8 to 9 per cent. Stock loans 6 to 7 per cent. on call, according to nature of collaterals. Sterling exchange firm at 8% premium between banks; 8? premium cash over the counter; drafts on New York } per cent. New York advices say the advance in rates of sterling exchange is more to be charged to a lack of supply of commercial bills than ordinary demand on account of affairs in London.

The small-pox question is again exciting attention. Mr. Weaver, of the Board of Health, offers 2 reward of a hundred dollars for a person who will find any one three times vaccinated who has had small-pox afterwards

About ninety persons went to Manitoba last season under the auspices of the Mon- treal Manitoba Colonization Society; a local institution to aid expectant emigrants to emigrate to that colony.

Your correspondent learned this forenoon of the suspension of the well known bank- ing and agency firm of Ganstane & Bos- sange, of Paris. They are represented in this city by Bossange & Gardner. They were agents in Paris of the Allan Line and the Dominion Government.

The committee to investigate the condi- tion of the Jacques Cartier Bank, reported to-day having written down assets, as com- pared with the result of the original investi- gation by the late President, Hon. J. L. Beaudry, $300,000. They recommend that the capital be reduced to $500,000, which they claim will give 10 per cent. surplus on a hard pan basis.

A superphospate factory is again spoken of here. It is said that H. W. Goldring, a London eapitalist, who bought McLaren phosphate lots in East Templeton, for $45,- 000 in cash, is moving in the matter. He is about to visit Ottawa to obtain the co- operation of the Government to aid him in this enterprise.

The Argenteuil contested election case has been postponed, to allow judgment to be given on a point of law raised by the respondent, as to whether the case should be allowed to proceed in its present form.

‘oRONTO, Jan. 8.

Rey. W. F. Chekery has just died (mid- night) of starvation. He was engaged ata salary of $800, but the congregation could only pay half that amount, and on $400 per annum he had to keep alive himself and his own family of five or six children, includ- ing an adult son who, sometime ago, had both his hands amputated ; two children of a dead brother and an invalid sister. Noth- ing was known of the extreme poverty of the family until Mr. Checkery’s death, when it was ascertained that the household had actually been existing for two years years past an almost bread alone. During that time they frequently had no bread in the house, and the taste of meat was almost forgotten.

The Khyber Pass is now quiet.

The British attacked Suleiman Khel’s marauders and killed seventy. This opera- tion will, it is expected, produce quiet on the frontier.

Lonxvon, Jan. 8.

A despatch from Lahore says General Stewart's occupation of Candahar will mark the conclusion of a definite period of the war; all will then have been done that the Quettah column can possibly do before win- ter. It is true, unlimited discretion is given to General Stewart, and possibly he may project the occupation of Ghirish which is an important stragetic position, but
