General Sheridan— Dead. Nonquirr, M 438... Aug. 5. General Sheridan died to-night of heart failure.

Nonqurer, Mass., Aug. 5. _ Gen, Sueridan’s death occurred at 10.20 this evening. Previous to the sudden #) pearance «f heart failure, at about 9.30, there had been no premonitions to-day of any unfavorable change in his condition. rhe weather had been warmer than usual, and the General was at times a little rest- less, but seemed generally bright and cheerful to-day. He was very strong and took a full supply of nourishment. He slept occasionally as usual, and the doctors went to the hotel for supper. Soon after their return the usual preparations for the night were made. At about 9.20 o’clock General Sheridan said ‘good night” to his brother, who went to the hotel. At 9.30 symptoms of failure suddenly ap- peared and Drs, O'Reilly and Matthews immediately applied remedies which proved successful in all similar previous attacks, but this time were without effect. Despite all that could be done Gen. Sheridan gradually sank into a condition of complete unconsciousness and at 10.20 breathed his

last. No arrangements have yet been de- termined upon in regard to the time or place of burial.

The Department of Marine has been ad- vised that after the crew had been taken off the Norwegian barque Thor at Petipeswick Point, N. 8., last Sunday, the clothing and baggage were stolen. The captain has been advised to apply to the local authorities for redress.

Railway Department officials say the Government railway contract in Nova Scotia was taken away from Dr. Norvin Green and other New York capitalists, be- cause they failed to carry out the terms of the contract.

A meeting of the Council of the Dominion Rifle Association has been fixed for Wed- nesday, when a design for the Lansdowne cup will be selected.

In a telegraphic rifle competition between the Halifax Garrison Artillery team and # team of the Toronto Rifle Association fired yesterday, Halifax won by 33 points in a total of 674. The match was fired in a heavy rain storm. The two Harris brothers made the same score for the third time this season.

The Trades and Labor Council have adopted a resolution protesting in the strongest terms possible against the working of the Welland Canal on the Sabath day, and praying the Dominion Government for a cancellation of the order forthwith.

A. Wright, editor of the Labor Re- form, has been appointed lecturer of the Knights of Labor. All the lecturers will meet in Philadelphia on 9th inst. for in- struction in the new scheme of education recently projected by Gen. Master Work- man Powderly.

or in some other way was involved in the

and as this is being used to my prejudice, |

to request of the City Council an investiga-

Fisu.—All kinds of fish are in light sup- plyand prices are generally higher and firm. Cedtish are in good demand at quotations. Mackerel very scarce, higher and firm. Box herring also a shade higher. Some in- quiry for pickled herring.

Porarors.—The market has been well supplied this week, receipts including a good many natives. Demand has been fair for strictly extra stock, but is now confined pretty closely to the city trade, out-of-town buyers finding supplies nearer home. No material change in prices.

Eces.—Receipts for the week 6 boxes, 87 bbis., 9,153 cases; last week 50 boxes 38 bbis., 11,774 cases. Receipts have been lighter and demand for choice fresh stock has been alittle more active, but with no material change in prices. Fresh-laid eastern eXtras are in slight supply and firm at 19c. Choice marks of P. E. Island, N. S. and N. B. sell quite readily at 18c. Chvice Canadian also bring 18c¢. Western show the effects of hot weather and are rarely good enough to exceed 164c. Michi- gan have to be much better than the aver- age to bring over 17 4c.
