We have heard from seventy-seven con- stituencies in Ontario, fifty-four constitu- encies in Quebec, and all the constituencies in the Maritime Provinces. We are now in a position to estimate, from pretty accurate data, the glorious results of the great con- test.

soventy |! is somewhat marred by the temporary loss of Mr. Peter Mitchell, Mr:. King and Mr. Langevin. But the defeat of these statesmen is fully compensated by the rout of Blake, Jones, Coffin and Cart- wright, and by the narrow escape of the redoubtable Premier himself.
In Ontario no less than thirty-six Gov- ernment strongholds have been captured from the enemy ; while among the promin- ent Liberal-Conservatives returned by the Conservatives are : Thomas White, of the Montreal Gazetie; Kirkpatrick, of Fon- tenac; McDougall, of Halton ; Dalton Me- Carthy, of North Simcoe; McKenzie Bowell, of Belleville; Bunting, of the Tor- onto Mui.
In Quebec ten Grit strongholds have been taken by storm ; Pope, Colby, Coursol, Mousseau and Caron are returned to bear aloft the Liberal- Conservative standard.
Nova Scotia has done nobly. Ten Nova Scotian seats filled by Grits in the last House will be filled by Libera!-Conserva- tives in the next. Tupper will fill the place, unworthly filled by Jones, of chief repre- sentative of Nova Scotia in the Dominion Government ; while the vigor and ability of McDonald will be displayed in the part{ supinely and dumbly taken by Coffin.
New Brunswick alone of all the Provinces has endorsed the incapacity and corrup. tion of the ‘‘ Fly on the Wheel” Ministers. The causes are not far to seek. The people were misled. Till within afew weeks, the St. John Daily Press was a unit in favor of the Govenrment. Till the Sunarose, there was, in many parts of the Province, noth- ing to dispel the illusions presented by the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Freeman, and the Daily News. Nevertheless, the gallant Tilley is victorious ; while Domville has triumphed in King’s, Costigan in Victoria,
Yonnell in Carleton, and Girrourd in Kent.
But, of all the Provinces, Prince Edward Island has the greatest cause to glory in the victory achieved. In no Province were there greater difficulties to overcome. In no Province was the triumph of the Liberal- Conservatives so complete. Through the manipulations of the Local Premier thou- sands of Liberal-Conservative electors were disfranchised. The ‘‘ Free Trade Humbug” and the ‘‘ High Taxation Scare” were art- fully and persistently kept before the peo- ple. The National Policy of the Liberal- Conservative Party was grossly misrepre- sented. All the unworthy expedients known to Grit campaigners were tried. But, tried in vain. Drar Str,—The employees in Mr. Newson s Roctory bad resolved on having their annual pienie. Accordingly, on Wednesday morning last, they embarked from Pownal Wharf on hoard Mr. Coombs’ first-class pleasure boat (No. 10) for a cruise down the harbor extend- ing to Orwell Bay, and afterwards running back to a cove inside the Block House. All went ashore at the spot selected for the pic nicing ground. Appetities being sharpened by the invigorating sea breeze, ample justice was done to the contents of pocket pistols, provision baskets, etc. ,- seasoned red-hot with politics. After thus refreshing themselves, the entire company broke up mto small de- tachments, one of which wentled its way to the contiguous Light House, where one of our savans expatiated on the light house system, the electric light, and the last transit of V enus. Another party roamed the woods in quest of adventures. A squirrel was their only trophy; but they chivalrously refrained from exter- minating the smaller denizens of the forest, (the grey birds, owls, ete., ete.) A squad of sober-sides seemed to immensely enjoy a game of quoits; whilst another set amused them- selves and friends by an exhibition of gym- nastics, ‘Taken altogether, this has been the boss picnic of the season.
we marched steadily to the landing place, where three rousing cheers were given for the Queen, the boss, and for Pope and Brecken,—followed by a lively discussion on our red sandstone formation, which had been partially exposed by the joint action of the waves and weather on the adjacent cliff. The geologist of the party gave it as his decided opinion, that it was the work of the coral insect (Sebastiani Caboti) or the Colorado beetle. Whether be was right, was left for clearer heads to determine.
The embarkation was conducted with an amount of order and precision rivalling the famous retreat at Corunna. Arrived at Con- nolly’s Wharf, three cheers were given for our active and skillful boatman, which were re- ceived with more than the average amount of aquatic stolidity. After this the elder branches of the party made tracks for home, there to give a glowing account of the day’s doings ; whilst the youngesters slowly and sadly went on their way to place themselves ouce more under maternal surveillance.

AN ELEPHANT.

‘The Treasury has an elephant on its hands in the form of ten million silver dollars. One million of them weighs just 26 tons, therefore the United States ‘Treasury holds to day 260 tous of silver dollars. The principal demand for these standard dollars comes from Western States thus far; and as silver certifi- cates are used to represent the coin, there is little danger of the supply now on hand being exhausted. The higher Treasury officials con- fidently predict an immediate disappearance of the slight premium which gold coin now com- mands.
YELLOW FEVER.
Although the most distressing accounts of the yellow fever scourge continue to reach us and the pestilence appears as yet unabated, yet Southern residents predict, with the ut- most contidence, its disappearance within a month from now. ‘They reason from analysis, saying that ninety days is sure to compass the disease. It was so in all of the three epidem- ics that have visited New Orleans in the last twenty-five years. In 1853 the yellow fever carried off 8,117 persons in the city of New Orleans ; in 1852, 4,839 were stricken and died of the same dread disease; and in 1867 there were 2,972 victims. In each case the pesti- lence ran its race within ninety days. In 18538 the epidemic raged more fatally than it has ever done, though within seventy years that ill-fated city has been visited no less than twenty times by yellow fever, tens of thou sands of citizens being victims. Well versed physicians tell us that the way is perfectly plain to prevent the terrible plague, and nothing is necessary for that save simple san- itary measures. Prominent Southern men de- clare their belief that hereafter such precan- tions will be taken in the cities now under the curse as will effectually prevent the introdue- tion or outbreak of yellow fever to any extent in all years to come.
