[t did not centract smallpox The child was seven weeks old. John Prenty's child, on which the disease fully developed on Thursday, died last night.

Sir,—Wili you allow me, through Fre Examiner, to take notice of that con- temptible production signed ‘‘ Citizen’ in this evening’s Patriot. It is just possible that some may be entrapped and prejudiced by this low maligner; but the mase of the people know that already all ‘‘ thet money can do” has been done in the way of pro- curing the best of medical skill, ete. Dr. Johnson is respected and trusted by the whole community ; Dr. Jenkins has not only experience in the actual treatment of smalipox, but possesses the superior medical training of Europe; Dr. Warburton is knowar to possess a diploma from one of the first medical schools in existence, that of Edinburgh ; whilst Dr. S, R. Jenkins (already deservedly popular), besides the possession of fair medical training, has all the benefit accruing to him as the son and student of an experienced physician. It would be a foul disgrace to our people, who have behaved so admirably under the late trying circumstances, were they to accept the vile insinuations of such individuals as ** Citizen.” Had it not been for the timely warning of those he maligus, probably the whole city would, by this time, be ‘‘ de- populated,”

Sin,—The unwearied eflorts of the Board of Health, under God's blessing, has about restored cur city to its former security. and after consultation with His Worship the Mayor the Army have decided to hold the usual Sunday afternoon meeting in the Academy of Music, to begin at3 o'clock. The usual free breakfast will be held at 7.30 in the morning, but there will be no public service at night.

CASES AT RUSTICO AND NEW GLASGOW,

SMALLPOX

Siz,—I am informed that # rumor is in circulation to the effect that the man Peter Peters,who died at the residence of William Laird, Esq., New Glasgow, had no small: pox. For the information of all parties in- terested, I beg to say Peter Peters had confluent hemorrhagic variola—a very severe type. He was never vaccinated. Re- covery is the exception in such a type. The other cases under my care are so far doing weil. Bertha McKenzie has the semi-con- fluent variety, while her sister, Louisa, has varioloid without an eruption. In the latter case the power of vaccination ts plain—the vaccination developed regular: ly, but in Bertha’s case the vaccination ap- pears to be retarded by the,variolous dis- ease; but, no doubt, the disease is also modified partly in her case. I fail to see what motives can prowpt people to circu- late falsehoods in cases of this kind. 1 think they must belong to the tribe of fishes known as “‘Silurus glanis.” It is singular while the Board of Health at Rustico were doing their utmost to secure the services of a man who had the smallpox to bury the man, not one of those Chris- tian slanderers would venture within a mile to the house, and were it not for Capt. John McKay, of Stanley, who hervically coffined and buried the man alone, he would in all probability be unburied yet. The Rostico and New London Boards are doing their utmost to guard the public interests and prevent the disease from spreading, and should therefore receive public sympathy in- stead of slander.

Foul Play Suspected. A MURDER SUPP°SED TO HAVE BEEN COM- MITTED AT BLACK RIVER, N. 8,

There ia suspicion of foul play in con- nection with the human remains found in the woods of Black River, N. S., last month. A despatch from Amherst to the Halifax Ma: of the 3rd inst., says Coroner Black held an inquest yesterday, and after evidence in regard to the finding of the re- mains, a resident of Black River, named Horton, gave testimony. Hoe stated that two years ago last autumn, while his son was driving through the woods in the early evening, he meta men walking and carrying a valise, and a little later on another men ina buggy. The man with the valise was well dressed, about forty years old, and medivm in siza, while the one in the buggy resembled a ruffian. When young Horton was returning home the following morning by the same road, a few miles from where he had first met these men, he obsesved a buggy track leading into the ditch He observed e valise in the edse of the woods, together with papers and letters, which were close to the open valise. Fearing that some desperate deed had been committed, he touched neither valise nor papers, but hurried home and stated the facts to hia father, who in company with another man immediately visi‘ed the locality to fied that all had gone except the papers and letiers,some of which they took heme. These were placed in the Coroner’s han’s to dsy by Mr. Horton. ‘heir contents wou'd indicate a patent medicine man or agent of some kind. Many of them were stubs of orders and receipts, showing he hod collected cons derable sums of money. Voroner Black has about 50 of these coupons. They bear the names :f places in Ontario, Quebse and northern New York state and the months of April, May and June, 1882. On one, opposite the name and place, appears ‘* W. J. L Southworth, Aaltrville,” and one dozen of something had been ordered and $84 had been paid. On the back was signed the name W.C. Hill. Owing to the absence of young Horton and another witness the court was adjourned for a fortnight to ge fuller particulars.
