During the past few weeks there has been considerable discussion in Montague and vicinity regard- ing the Valieyfleld stream. and its present condition owing to gravel washing operations. It has been stated that this stream. one of the best fishing strealns in the Prov- ince. has been through gravel washing.

Attempts are presently under way to have this gravel washing ., unit removed from the stream,

. and strong resolutions have been submitted from- the Southern Kings Fish and Game Association the Montague Town Council, and the Montague Junior Board of Trade. It is sug ested that should this condition permitted to continue, that not only will the ,.Valleyfield stream be mined for 3 ever,- but no other stream on the g Island will be immune to gravel , r washing operations; with the con- , . Valleyfield Stream Gravel Washing Draws Petition

gravel was started some years ago. The silt and refuse from the gravel has been washed Into the river with the result that the river bed is covered with slit to some depth filling in the spawning beds of the trout and rolling the streams to such an extent that young trout fry cannot survive.

The farmers living along this river has used it for a watering place for their cattle but in its muddy state the cattle will not drink it. The mill ponds on the river have been filled up with silt so there is new little or no res- erve of water in the ponds to run the mills. The view of the river when clear was a beautiful sight, but is now an eyesore.

WASH ELSEWHERE

For fishing and beauty it was a wonderful tourist attraction. but that has been taken away from us. all for the selfish benefit of some few individuals who could very well wash their gravel at some in- let without interfering with the rights and benefits of the public at large and more especially of us in this vicinity.

As the Government has spent a very large amount of money dred- ging our harbour, which is a vital asset to the community, and as the water in the harbour is red with silt when gravel washing is being done. it would seem ridiculous to

Sudden Death Of Georgetown Man Yesterday

Mr. Thomas F. Renton. a mem. ber of the Town Council of Geo. rgetown. sucmmbed to a heart at- tack, shortly after 10 pm. last evening. The late Mr. Renton col- laspsed on the street about half I block from his home as he wag returning from attending a meet- lag of the Town Council which was Cillled 30 Organize a voluntee fire brigade and which was mended by MTV T-N Campbell, Provincial Tire Marshal.

The Iate.Mr. Rcillon was a retir- ed Canadian National Railway locomotive elli.Zlll8Cl'. and had Se,-V. ied on numerous Town Councils llnd was a former member of the 'Boar of School Trustees. He was I member of St. David's United Church and at the time of his death held the office of chairman of the trustee board.

The deceased was active in Church. civic and school affairs for msny years and his sudden pass- ing comes as a shock not only to the residents of Georgetown but to those of the Province where he was widely known.

Left to mourn are two. sisters Mae, and Ethel, both of George. town. y

TORONTO 1CP) - The Olitario Court of Appeal Monday threw out a metropolitan Toronto by-law or- dering the lluoridation of the area's water supply.

Chief Justice J. W. Pickup and four judges in a written judgluont upheld an appeal by suburban Forest Hill Village and ruled that metro has no power under the statutes to authorize the fluorida- tion of a municipal water supply.

Metro, which administers cer- tain public services of Toronto and 12 adjacent municipalities. passed the by-law last June. Forest Hill was the only municipality to hold out against it.

Mr. Justice Pickup said the de- cision has no bearing on the merits of fluoridation and deals only with metro's legislatve powers.
