Victor Hugo died last evening, When dying, he replied to an offer of the Arch- bishop of Paris, of spiritual assistance, and the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church aa follows:—

*‘Vietor Hugo is expecting death, but does not desire the services of a priest.’

Victor Hugo bequeathed all his manu- scripts to France,and left it to the Republic to select his burial place. The French Chambers adjourned to-day asa tribute of respect to his memory.

THE WINNIPEGERS PRAISED.

Hon. John Norquay, the Premier of Manitoba, sent the following telegram to General Middleton the day after the fight at Batoche :—

Ist. The rate of Assessisehy for the year commencing the Ist day of January, A. D., 1685, and ending 3tst of December, A. D, 1885, is hereby specified and tixed at the rave of one cent on every dollar of the value of Real Estate, as assessed by the Assessors of the said City, in their valuation rolls of such Real Eststs, made and duly returned by them on the Eleventh day of April, A, D., 1885.

2nd. The rate of Assessment for the year eommencing the Ist of Jaauary, A. D,, 1885, and ending 3lst day of December, A.
